I haven't seen these mentioned before, so I hope I'm not repeating some old topic.....

I stumbled across Lock & Lock brand containers in the grocery store a while back. They are rugged, air tight, water tight, easy to use, and come in a variety of sizes. Best of all they are relatively cheap.

I am experimenting with the 6 oz and 11 oz sizes. The 6 oz size is my bare bones PSK. I've used the 11 oz size to carry my multi-band radio while backpacking. In the photo, it's just filled with odds & ends.

Next to a RAT RC3 for size comparisons.

These containers are worth the couple bucks they cost. I give these containers :thumbup:

I have a few of those for food storage. I bought them for carrying leftovers mostly, and other crushable foods. I got tired of tupperware style containers leaking sauce and juices into my bag.

I have two that fit a sandwich well, and two that fit two sandwiches each. Good containers, but I have found I don't have too much use for a hardshell container.

I have a couple too and much prefer them to the Otter type hard shell boxes. Much lighter. Maybe the Otter type is good for conoeing as it is tougher, but if I'm carrying it, I want lighter.

I use the Trangia Mess Tin 210, here, which has a lid and a detachable, folding, insulated handle, giving secure storage, and a container in which to boil water, cook and drink from!

Aluminum, 5.6 oz, 6.5 x 3.5 x 2.6 inches, or for the larger model, 8.6 oz, 7.8 x 5.1 x 2.8 inches.

Dude - true tuperware costs a bloody fortune - but that stuff is as good as good gets. My wife is addicted to the damn stuff. It is the bombe, but too much money for a PSK.

However, I like the lock'n'lock containers and posted them as my PSK container in Mentor's thread. Anyhow, one great thing about Lock'n'Lock is they fit a Maxpedition Falcon II 2nd compartment perfectly. As mentioned - for a couple of bucks, you get watertight goodness and enough robustness without the big weight consequence that the super heavy duty containers warrant.

I should pick up a couple if/when I see em...might be a good replacement for the aloksaks since Otterboxes and Pelican cases are too bulky/heavy for me.

Whatever happened to those Inova waterproof cases Spark said he might be able score?

Very cool. For years I went with some kind of a pouch for my PSK, but I recently switched to a Pelican case and I'm going to stick with a hard container for the foreseeable future. These containers look perfect for PSKs, and they are a steal compared to the Pelicans.

All the best,

- Mike

Yeah, they make great kit boxes. I keep looking at Pelican and Otterboxes (kit fetish!) but am always put off by the relatively large size compared to actual internal space. These plastic tubs are more efficient in that regard.

Be wary of look-alikes though, I bought some a little while ago (for actually putting food in, for my lunch). They were in a supermarket and looked just like lock-n-lock; I thought they were. The snap closure on one side broke after about three weeks of lunches.

Years ago, before lock-n-lock, I used the plastic press-fit-lid type of tubs in my Berghaus crusader side pockets. I managed to find some that fit almost perfectly. One side held my water purifier, FAK and survival kit, the other side had things like food and a small gas cooker for easy access during breaks. Oh, and toilet paper etc.

I also use the them in the main sack, just to organise stuff. They are light enough.

That's exactly the thing that gets to me too . Excellent boxes for me, if I don't carry them around.

I use a small Otterbox because it's almost completely crushproof. You could sit on it, and it'd be okay. I've got one that's several years old, and it's holding up fine.

If you don't expect to need a bombproof box, these are a great option. I used to use ziplock freezer bags for organizing small gear, but got away from them after I found out that they aren't really waterproof. Lost twenty rolls of film before I figured it out.

Just a heads up for those that want to try out the "bombproof" cases. I'm not sure of the actual external dimensions, but it seems to me that the OtterBox small case is a bit more compact than the Pelican, and they seem to hold the same amount of stuff

Good to know . I'll check out Otter boxes again next time I'm in REI...I've only ever fiddled with Pelicans.

the steel international coffee tins make a good survival kit. sturdy and the lid snaps tight
you can cook in them as well for a few uses. I have never paid for them, ask around your family/friends and they always show up

as far as a BDU PSK for hunting I would go for a softer pack less noise as your walking or better yet chest Pocket
The 1.2 quart size will hold 500 rounds of CCI MiniMags or Stingers in thier plastic containers.
If you have an Asian supermarket nearby go look and you'll find Stainless Steel contianers similar to the the Aluminum ones for a 3rd of the price in different sizes .. Fit BDU pocket:thumbup:
