Hey WSS,

I am hoping to solicit opinions from you on a new design of mine. I really like the idea of a PSK as a back up in the pocket or pack while hiking. There are a couple of good options available, I wanted to throw my idea in the ring for consideration.:)

Pic shows blanks only, these are NOT refined, hardened, finished at all. I literally just ground these out the past couple of nights.

OAL is 6 3/8 inches
Stock is 1/8 - 1095
Edge will be approximately 2 3/8 inches - full flat grind
I plan to use Kydex and create a small sheath that can be worn around the neck with a break away para cord lanyard. I will also place the eyelets where you could attach a small Tech-Lok.
I plan to use 3/16's Micrata/wood to give it a decent grip but, not to large of a profile to negate the overall purpose, of a stow away knife. It will also have a lanyard hole at the butt.

The bottom edge of the handle is 3 3/8 from point to point (make sense?) My hand fits well, I wear large sized gloves.

Please let me know what you think. Thanks.

I dig it. I love the shape of the handle. I think despite owning at least one PSK already, most of the guys here will be interested. I can't wait to see the finished product. Given the price and pictures of the sheath, etc. I'll probably be interested in one.

At the risk of being considered a PITA. What type of steel and a picture of it in your hand would give even a better idea (at least for me) as too size and shape. The thickness sounds right I believe and I like your description of the sheath very much. Same idea that I have.

steel type and a picture of one finished product would help... but going by the blank and not knowing the steel, looks good... more info needed...

Thanks Snow and kr1,

It is 1095, I will have it professionally hardened and triple tempered, I use Peters in Meadville, PA. They will guarantee the Rc, which will be 58-59.

I will try to get an in hand pick later tonight.

Thanks for looking.

Hello Texastonydobs,

I will try to get an in hand shoot a bit later.

As for finished, I should have them done within the next 4 to 6 weeks. There are 11 of them, I got a little aggresive and ground out 63 knives for my second complete batch. Lots of work to do...

Thanks,
John

That size and shape looks good. Small knives really see a lot of carry and use because they are so handy. I look forward to seeing a complete one

They look awesome to me, even if they will be full flat...:p

How is Peters for Heat treating? How does there price structure work, and do they have a minimum quantity requirement?

Thanks Tknife.

Hey Stingray, Thanks. If not full flat, then what could you see on this knife? Maybe convex?

As for Peters, try Brad there, you could get the number from www.petersheattreat.com They do charge by the pound, but in increments. So for 0 to 20 pounds is $X etc. THey will do one or two but, it would not be cost effective. I try to send them as many as possible (of course this is only my second batch of knives.) And I went a bit crazy (63 in total)... check out this pic:

So you're going to need some trustworthy, esteemed members of this forum to test them for you and give everybody great reviews, right? :D

Hey Thane, LOL. Ya, I don't watch much TV. And Honestly, sparks flying everywhere.. what a stress reliever, not kidding.

Hey check out this pic:

It is the field knife I had told you about. The top is 11 1/4 with a 5 1/4 cutting edge. It is 3/16 1095 stock. THe handle is very generous and should allow for chopping when you grip the rear, but the choil on the blade seems to allow for good grip when forward, we'll see when it has a handle on it.

THanks.

I was thinking about a pass around, I didn't want to overstep my "freshmen" knife maker boundaries, but if your interested.

I don't think there are boundaries here. Every knifemaker on this site that I've ever interacted with is a chill guy, especially the ones that frequent the W&SS forum.

And of COURSE I'm interested. Seeing a knife on the internet, I can tell you it looks great, but using it is a different thing entirely.

oooh... those don't look too bad at all... i like the overall shape and the handle looks very comfortable... i'm in for one of those for sure...

what flavor of handle scales are you putting on them....:D

The design looks great, and 3/16ths will be perfect. Actually all three sizes look great, and will all be very tempting when finished :D

OK Snow.

When they are done I will post one or two for a pass-around!

Thanks for the inspiration.

Great Thane. The mid size is 5/32 by 9 7/8 OA. the small is 1/8 stock by 7 1/4 OA.

I am going to "tactify" one of the large knives, it is going to Iraq to an Intel officer. He wants Tan g10, desert camo powder coat and a spec ops sheath. I can't wait to see how it turns out!

Thanks.
