I think we should have a PSK outing challange. A night out with just your PSK. What do you guys think?

Im short on funds right now, so I cant put up a sweet prize, but I think we need more participation around here, and the experiance could be worth alot more then a prize. No time limit, go out whenever, whatever weather you want. Take pics and post em up!

Is this something we have interest in??

A group of us are doing that in May. The catch is that the kit can`t cost more than $20 total.

I'd fit right in on that one, I have a kit that cost me under $3.00:p

keeps in an old Swiss Army soap container..

The idea came from a topic outdoorsfan posted about, called "Dollar Store Survival." Here are the guidelines we came up with.

The idea is to put together a survival kit that costs no more than $20 total. The kits would be evaluated on how well they met the needs of the following areas:

Fire
Shelter
Signaling
First Aid
Tools
Repair
A container, bag, etc.

We would vote on the kit and contents and you must save receipts to prove that your kit did not exceed the $20 limit. Also, if you use only a portion of an item you purchased, say 4 of the 8 packs of matches from the Dollar Store, the cost would be prorated (ie: $.50, not the full $1 cost). You can also use items purchased at a second hand store or flea market, anywhere really, as long as you can produce a receipt.

We thought it would be a fun project for our next gathering in May.

I'm game for it once the weather warms up, I am done freezing my ass off this year..

Yeah I'm game. I like the idea of a PSK night. I like the idea of trying time this so its warm enough to not freeze my ass off like I almost did last weekend but slip in there before the bugs make doing this kind of thing an exercise in torture.

I'm okay with the value-based PSKs, but there is part of me that would like to just test the tried and true one that I've put together for myself. I think more than specifying value of gear, perhaps we can specify size of the 'gear package'. To me, I'd like to see something where you basically take what you normally would for a day hike but are forced into an overnighter. So basically, here I'd pretty much take the same stuff that I normally take along my dog walks and see how that works out as an overnight kit.

I like this idea Ken.

If we can get even 5 or 6 guys to do this, it will be an awesome thread. As with anything else. Let your skill level dictate how far you take this one. Dont get in over your head, but do get out of your comfort zone a bit. Ride that line baby!!

Whenever you guys have the time to get out. Id love to see this an ongoing thing. That said, Im waiting til the temps warm up a touch at night. Id venture to say after people start doing this, others will follow suit that might be intimidated at first. Whats really cool is since we all live in differant locals, we can really learn from eachothers experiances. What worked, what didnt, and what we should add or subtarct from our kits.

Truth be told im much more apt to be pressed into an impromptu overnight for some reason like weather or car breakdown then stranded for days with just my PSK. Especially somewhere I cant get cell service or walk out of. So I see the dayhike kit thing. Ive always wanted to rely on that PSK I carry though......

I think I am going to try both. Probably the survival tools/kit I would have on me for a day hike for one (aka...my prepared PSK), and then the $20, or last ditch type kit for the other. I think it will be fun, but I believe waiting will also be necessary. I am about to go out and take a physical fitness test and it is a little on the cold side for that if you ask me.

I remember those days......APFT in the snow. woohoo. :barf:

I heard they changed the APFT to more of a confidence course or something...

Glad u are on board bro.

they were talking about changing it, but as of right now it is still 2 min push-ups, 2 min sit-ups, and a 2 mile run.

time to go hit up Taco Tuesday and and drink some beer. :D
