PSK outing challange

hrmmm....this sounds like fun. ive made a little lumbar pack i wouldnt mind trying out...and i just got my first stainless steel bottle. we're in our rainy season so it should be interesting.

I'll be home from school in a couple weeks. I'm ready, but have to get through exams before i can be running off on an adventure. lookin forward to it

I have been thinking of doing that. $20 at the dollar store including knife. So just clothes and what is bought at the dollar store.

Yeah I'm game. I like the idea of a PSK night. I like the idea of trying time this so its warm enough to not freeze my ass off like I almost did last weekend but slip in there before the bugs make doing this kind of thing an exercise in torture.

I'm okay with the value-based PSKs, but there is part of me that would like to just test the tried and true one that I've put together for myself. I think more than specifying value of gear, perhaps we can specify size of the 'gear package'. To me, I'd like to see something where you basically take what you normally would for a day hike but are forced into an overnighter. So basically, here I'd pretty much take the same stuff that I normally take along my dog walks and see how that works out as an overnight kit.
This is what I was thinking, when I'm on a short walk/hike or gonna be out all day in the bush I always have my Max. bottle holder kit.
I'm going to give my bottle holder kit a go, something along the lines of these fine gents :)

This is what I'm talking about ! A couple of my buddies & myself were just talking about doing this "Basic kit" camping trip so I'll see if I can get the ball rolling !

I've tried this several years ago.
It was really a tough night.
To get rid of bugs, I had to keep a somkey fire but fire smokey enough to get rid of them was also smokey enough to get rid of me. :D
To sleep on the bed I've improvised was also difficult.

It ended up with a lesson that how great modern outdoor equipments are. :)

I like it because folks will get out in the woods and post cool pics.... but I don't get it. In highschool, we use to have "bushparties" where everyone got blasted and spent the night out in the woods. Sure some of us brought tents... most of us never made it into them before passing out by the fire or facedown in the thicket. We were exhausted, dehydrated, hung-over, hungry and often injured(from the "feats-of-strength conests", of course.) and we never gave thought to survival. If you can light a fire, you can make it through a chilled night, just sitting there.... no water, no food, no PSK.

Maybe we should change the challenge to "How much can you accomplish with your PSK on an overnighter?" See how far our PSK's will take us in campcraft, water treatment, fire, shelter, trapping, etc... AND how far your personal skills extend beyond the PSK.

I agree, or even a step further. We all have had the discussion about "The 3". You know, what three items would you absolutely want on you if you had to spend a week in the outdoors.

My three are a knife, my guyot, and a tarp. I think I will skip the water bottle challenge and do just that.

Thatz wut I'm takin' bout, Tony!... Done safely, of course.

I was just thinking about the safety aspect. I will bring my Bottle holder. In the attached pouches I will only carry a cell phone, small first aid kit, and a camera ofcourse.

If I can not get fire I am sure I can survive the night with no sleep being cold as long as I am not wet. If I get in over my head I go home. The spot I have in mind will have a stream, in which I will have water, allthough I wouldn't mind boiling it first, but if I can not get fire I will just filter and take my chances. I would like to do it for two nights, but work schedule and a pregnant wife at home will probably limit me to one night. I really feel that having an extra night will give me better odds at catching anything in a trap. Then again, I would only make a trap if I can get fire... There's allot of ifs in these types of challenges that makes it all more exciting...

Personally, unless you are close to your vehicle, I would pack a small ruck with adequate supplies. You don't have to use it. Why have a minimalist safety net for your minimalist outing. Be safe, not proud, bud.

The small ruck I think would make me not try so hard. I may give up on fire after only a few attempts if I knew I had a lighter in the pack a few feet away. Also if I can't get fire, I think it would interesting to see just how cold I could get before I called it quits. Also sitting in complete darkness would be interesting as well.

Maybe having Marcelo or Kuruptd with me will be my control. I will stay away from them but close enough if I needed to I can get their help.

I would say Riley, but knowing him he would want to go with the same nothing I am going with...

Ah... so you're weak... I understand. Adhering to one's principles can be tough when faced with the possibility of being uncomfortable. Yes, if you don't have the slightest bit of willpower, bring some friend who do.

You see, you get me

There were really no set rules on what you can take. Take nothing if ya want. Skill will of course dictate what you can accomplish with what. Not a bottleholder challenge or PSK challenge, just an "as minimal as you care to go" kinda trip. I dont want to push folks who might not be as confident in their skills away, I want everyone regardless of skill level to get out of their comfort zone. Of course physical ability and skill set determine what ones comfort zone is.
