I have been tossing around this idea for a while now and just got to grinding something out (only rough ground at this point). It's primary use would be a ferro striker, but in a pinch you have a decent spear/arrow head, prison shank and maybe even a small game skinner. I'm thinking of wrapping the handle with either some 3 strand paracord or some high strength fishing line.

your thoughts?

i think fishing line would be awesome (the braided not monofilament) just kinds goes with the idea of a harpoon, also you would be able to keep around a hundred feet of line on the handle compared to only 2-3 feet of paracord just my 2 cents

I like it, nice job man! I wish I had the tools and space to experiment making stuff like that. I can't justify paying the price for similar (Atwood-like) tools that I see, as much as I like them. Maybe if I win a lotto...

Cool as the other side of the pillow. How's it look fixed onto an improvised harpoon shaft, I wonder?

I would love to have one of those! Great little .. object? I like it A LOT!

I have a suggestion that may (or may not) appeal to you for this little guy. Since you're going to wrap the handle anyway(and you mentioned it's for "in a pinch") you could put a small saw on the handle area. Before you wrap it lay a small (thin) peice of leather over the saw, then wrap it. That will make the handle edges a little softer as well as keep you from getting cut.

With the saw on there you not only have the spear tip but also the perfect sized saw to notch the spear for the tip.

Just an idea
David

Thanks guys! I'm really just in the conceptual stages with this thing and was thinking about it more last night as the beers were setting in.

Echo4v - that saw idea, there could be something there, maybe a fish hook or two as well.

I do think fishing line is the way to go and if I tapper the ends a bit, and make more of a coke bottle shape, there could a good hand fishing device in it (see link). I bet if I do that and strap the pointy end on a stick, you could really wing the line out there.

I'll play around with some more concepts and do some testing tonight. If I can make a ferro striker that is an all around utility tool I think it will be the ticket. There is also going to be a kydex sheath, I could add a small capsule to it to house fish hooks, weights, tinder, etc.

This is a fun project.

Although not an origional concept I think that yours is the best executed that I have yet seen. My advice, for what it's worth, would be not to try adding any other features now, people tend to try and cram too many ideas into one tool and it detracts from it's origional design !!!;)

I hear ya, there is not too much in the knife world that is totally original and I do try and keep my stuff fairly practical. Thanks for the nice words and thumbs up.

I think a bit of hourglass shaping to the handle area will accommodate the fishing line better. I haven't heat treated it yet so there is still room to play. I'll do some tinkering in my drawing software today during my lunch hour.

I've had a bit of practice with the spear/javelin thing. I like your concept a lot, and the rearward facing point is neatly done.

Only real suggestion is to continue your lashing grooves all the way around. My personal preference would be to leave more meat for lashing, but the contour of the handle is really sweet- so I might not change it.

I would add some small cuts on the other side so that the cord will not slip off of the metal when lashed to a pole. Other than that i like it.
Only question is how much will it cost, when can I buy one. seriously - I will take on today as long as its not too expensive...

None of my stuff is expensive. just run a search for Centerfinger on jerzeedevil.com to get an idea or take a look at centerfinger.com.

I still haven't upgraded my account here, so I won't sell here.
