So this I am putting in the ATH forum to see what my fellow axe heads say about this. I don't venture often from this forum so I want to see what is said. Being from Pa and having been to penn state many times while a college guy, I have my own thoughts. Wanted to see what anyone else thought. If we need to move this - it is what it is.

It's a sad situation no doupt about it!
Really just makes me sick to my stomach :(
I'm a huge college FB fan ( Roll Ride ;) ). What if this were to happen in 'Bama?
I would just have to walk away! My own self respect would not allow me to support such a program!
It would hurt, but I would have to do it if I were to ever look at myself in the mirror again.

I'm a fan and I've always respected Coach Paterno, the play of the team and the tradition of Penn St. football.

But this is really the most horrific thing that a school and a coaching staff could have done. In 1993 our U of W Huskies received a death sentence because a quarterback got a Camaro from a supporter. The program has never recovered.

What Penn St. did was a million million million times worse. We need to send a message that a football program is not the only thing that is important at a university - a notion that is all too commonly held.

Banned forever? I don't think forever is necessary. The lesson could be learned from a harsh enough punishment. I think a fair penalty would be a 5 year closure of the football program followed by a 5 year ban from bowl play once they're admitted back into the league.

Coaching staffs, university trustees and administrators need to recognize that there are things far worse than a scandal hitting the press.

Penn St. football would have survived the scandal of doing the right thing and reporting the abuse of children. Whether they survive this will depend on how their fan base feels about the team if/when they're allowed to play football again. All this assumes the the University itself survives the civil suits that this abuse has spawned. Penn State's pockets aren't quite so deep as the Catholic Church's.

At that last game of the season last year the players should have walked on the field, taken a knee for a minute of silence and then went back to the locker room. I bet most of those players would do that if they had it to do over again. I could not have beared to wear the team uniform on that day.

lots of hateful things I could say. bad for Joe to be tarnished at end of career, but jerry can rot some where. pick yourself up, clean yourself off and keep on going.

when some one saw him in a shower all slippery and wet, maybe the should tried to "kick the extra point"

Just politics, nobody wants bad news to get out about them and just get the problem over with, if they did there would be less bad press and it would be forgotten in 6 months, this will linger for a long time.

Lots of reaction of course here in Pa. Terrible scene really. News of the real paterno is finally swaying public opinion. There had been rumors for years about his power at Psu - guess the truth finally caught up with him. Guess we will see now what happens with the civil suits and if Psu has anyone money left when that part is over.

Obviously Jerry is a disgusting individual who will get the judgement he deserves from the big guy upstairs.

As for Joe Pa and and the others. Shame on them. They put football and money above the safety of children. I lost all respect for all of them. All the good they did in football won't make up for their shameful sell out against kids. They also enabled this abuse to take place since they CHOSE to do nothing.

I won't say on a public forum what I hope is happening to 'Jo pa' right now and what I hope happens to Jerry and anyone else involved that knew of these acts against all that is right!
The ones that knew and did nothing are NO better than the pervert himself.

Done :(

I'm shocked by how light the NCAA penalties on Penn State are. I can't believe that they're going to let them play football this Fall. What the NCAA is saying is that there is no atrocity bad enough that they would cancel a game. I think that's pathetic.

The cash penalty is meaningless. That program is rolling in money. The stripping of past victories is also meaningless. So it boils down to 4 years of no Bowl games and some lost scholarships. That's it. For the most heinous crimes imaginable. Unbelievable!

Yep!
Makes me sick all over again...
I guess covering up sex with little boys deserves nothing in today's sick society :(
So much for their 'harsh' penalties!
In my eyes it is nothing!

I will never say that these crimes weren't a terrible thing but nothing about it is a football issue. Joe Paterno told his superiors what he knew which wasn't much and they are the ones that covered it up. I don't see why the football team should be punished when absolutely none of the people who knew about this are still there and the ones who did know things will either be in court or in Paterno's case dead. It's a shame that Paterno will never be able to defend himself since he is receiving blame where there is no evidence to back up the accusations against him. When all of this started charges were made against the penn state officials who knew but not Paterno because he told the people who he thought would handle the situation better than he could. The former president of the university and former athletic director are the ones who covered things up and if that is the case and the ncaa does need to step in then shouldn't every team be punished. NCAA sanctions are to punish teams for trying to get an upper hand on their competition outside of the rules but this is a legal issue being handled by our court system but instead of waiting for a full investigation to come out they brought down their sanctions to appease the public. there is absolutely no reason for the ncaa to be involved because this is a situation that should be taken care of by our courts. only one side of the facts is being shown to the public because the Freeh report isn't complete all it is is a document written by someone who got payed 6 million dollars by the board of trustees to look into things and make sure they came out of this looking innocent and if you read all 267 pages like I have I'm sure you will not agree with the conclusions he came to. that isn't to say that his findings might not be true because there is a chance that what he published is the truth but until a complete investigation is made people shouldn't jump to conclusions and condemn people for something that they had absolutly no part in. I do agree with everyone else out there that the crimes that Sandusky committed were terrible and he should be punished sevirly along with everyone else who knew about the situation and covered it up and that may or may not have been Paterno but as of right now there is no evidence to prove that he did just Freeh's conclusions that were made because that is what he wanted and it definitely isn't any one of the current players who are currently being forced to make life changing decisions because the public decided to have a witch hunt on penn state university. The last thing I have to say is before you trust everything you hear in the news and read in the papers read the documents yourself and be educated because our society twists things to what people will keep watching. and also I am someone who believes that everyone should have the right to be represented in a fair way and regardless of how aweful Sandusky's crimes were penn state football has been treated unfairly through all of this and before you make up your mind and condemn them read the whole story every last one of the 267 pages because I promise you will feel differently after you have

If this was a one time recent incident, he can say that he didn't know how to handle it and passed it on to his uppers. But over 10 years and multiple charges?

My dad taught me that often, a lack of response is a response itself. And this isn't some stupid gambling debts, hazing, fights, etc.. this is child molestation, a crime that's even looked down in the prison system.

This is about leaders of a school that forgot the most important mission of its institution; to guide young men and women into productive roles in society. I feel bad for the collateral effects to State College, PA. But a historic crime requires a historic punishment.

Joe Pa had the power to stop it.
You 'hit the nail on the head'!
He is just as guilty as the pervert in my eyes.
I don't care who he told and what they did or didnt do.
HE STILL KNEW!!! And did NOTHING.
I hope he's getting what he deserves in the hell that he is in!
All involved that knew will get what they deserve one day.
The football program should be gone!

A similar situation is going on right now at the Univ. of Montana except it involves cover-ups of rape, sexual assault and various other criminal activities by athletes (mostly FB players).
The Dept. of Justice has gotten involved!
Folks have been fired and some have resigned. I stopped supporting that program years ago, and feel the same about them as I do about penn st.

I used to go to every home game!
My filter for what's right and wrong still works. ;)

I feel the same way about this as I do abusive sexual predators in any of the other fields thse people gravitate to. That includes religion/ schools/ youth groups/ law Enforcement etc etc. Punish the indivdual based on cupability- prison for offenders, criminal punishment for anyone with a "duty" to protect or report. If you covered up or benifited - fired and banned for life in the chosen field. And of course because this is America ... the lawyers will get rich on the lawsuits.
I don't believe the players should be punished for something out of thier control as in adjusting the win record. A fine that effects tutition is also a bad idea IMO- punishing the wrong people in the end.
I also don't think a witchhunt for people who "should" have known or done something will help.
In my experience , when something like this occurs- tons of people "suspected" or heard "rumors" about it. Unless they had a duty or were sworn to act... thier going to have to be judged by a higher authority. JMO
PS: would you report a rumor of a man commiting a crime if it was totally against what you knew of the man?

if there was any proof that Joe Paterno knew anything then I would agree with you but the first incident in 98 was resolved by the police and the court system they concluded that the situation was completely innocent so they dropped the case how can you expect someone to go against what the professionals said and then in 01 when Mcqueary told him about something he was not specific about any details which he admitted. even with minimal information he reported it to people who's job it was to look into things because he didn't have enough information to go to the authorities and then the people who he reported it to didn't do their job and that is a terrible crime in and of itself but Joe Paterno did what he was supposed to do. and the ncaa has no authority to jump in to a situation like this, if you had a situation where a coach walks into the Lasch building(where all this happened) and shot someone and killed them it doesn't mean that it is a football issue it is a criminal act committed in a football building. even though killing someone is a terrible thing to do the ncaa has no grounds to punish that and the only reason they did is because they had to save themselves from the public outcry from people who haven't read all of the facts or accepted that all of the facts still aren't known. Joe Paterno could have done everything everyone accuses him of but I will defend him until we know all of the facts. its a shame that such a great man will be remembered this way and that he isn't around to defend himself. have fun tearing down an amazing university and program that stood for everything that a team should because there will never be a team with a coach like that again. and if it was any other school no one would be trying to ruin the reputation the same way because to the media this is a bigger story than any other school in the country. so read and learn rather than listen to the media because like i said before this is their witch hunt and they found their witch.

i agree complete it is hard to accuse a friend who you have known well for 20 years of raping children based off someone saying something that was nonspecific

NOw that the punishment has been handed down by the NCAA there are a couple things to comment on. Number one the innocent are being punished in a big way. It is dumb to take away wins on paper, they won those games plenty of people saw it happen. The teams that lost do not feel any better now that the win has been awarded to them. Only the goody-2-shoes at NCAA feel any better by the punishment dealt. Although something was needed to make sure all schools are afraid of letting these things happen. I think a negotiated punishment would have been more effective.

I'm glad they took down the statue, based on the investigation Paterno had more then a passing mention to work with. So I wish he had lived to see his statue torn down.

I couldn't agree more!
