I have no notions of actually being able to engage in precision, long-range marksmanship exercise.

Leaving that use aside, are there any good reasons to not get a PTR 91 rifle if the price is good? Are they functional/reliable enough should they be needed for serious use? Are there good reasons to avoid them?

Good rifles and a classic, proven design if you want a .308 battle rifle. Mags are very cheap for surplus German ones which is a plus. Were as low as $2ea per mag years ago.

Ammo availability and price would be my concern. Weight would be a secondary concern, unless I was planning on using it in a fixed position. If I was potentially going to be carrying it over distance, weight ...

I own a bunch of cetme and hk style roller delayed blowback rifles. they are a pain to clean and do mangle brass...but there is no other real reason not to get one of those two things dont bother you.

I've owned one for about fifteen years. Well made, very accurate and lots of fun to bang away with. Not ammo sensitive; will shoot just about any crap surplus rounds you feed it.

Also, as it is based on the HK-91, it will accept the German-made .22 conversion kit that includes a barrel insert and two .22 mags. In order to scope it, you will need to buy a NATO adapter; think I paid about $50 for mine.

As for being a PITA to clean, I just squirt TSI-321 down the barrel and flush out the action with the stuff after shooting. Keeps everything clean and well lubed.

Is it heavy? Yes. But it's worth it.

I've never shot one, but a friend of mine has one. He was shooting it at an action match. Don't ask me why, but this was a few years ago, when ammo didn't cost you your firstborn. It seemed to be a great, reliable rifle. I did see one of the casings that it was throwing about 30 feet away catch a guy in the forehead and cut him.

Shot several HK 91's, in my opinion and the opinion of the owner, the best. Meaning accuracy, fit and finish, pretty much everything. Shot a Century Arms C308. Way, way worse fit and finish. But, it's a lot cheaper, and it works. Accuracy is just ok, but iron sights were way off, good thing it has a Pic rail to mount optics on. Relative got a PTR-91. Ok, so this is from a pool of one gun. Chamber flutes not cut correctly. When usuing thin walled commercial .308 brass, brass would actually expand into the flutes and become stuck, even to the point of forming holes in the brass. Gun sent back to PTR. Now functions reliably with Nato spec 7.62x51mm , but still not reliable at all with commercial .308 Win. Disappointed.
