Public knife experiment

I live in a town where if I'm NOT carrying a knife, folks think I'm strange. I went to the movies the other day with my Puukko hanging off my hip in a dangler sheath. If they would have called me in for that, they would have discovered my LM Wave on my belt, SAK in my coat pocket and LM Squirt on my keychain. My kids bring SAKs to school and I did a knife making demo last year for them(grade 1 thru 7)

Cool. I felt more of that when I lived further north or in a small town. My line of work calls for police checks and vulnerable sector checks, so I may lean on the side of caution more than the average bear. I don't have all the answers and never will, but I try to juggle my personal interests with social responsibility. So, I may be a little more up tight about were I carry than other Canucks.

The church thing was not really something that I would sweat, a school however is totally different, or a government building with higher level security.

Yep, courthouses are right out.
You can't even bring a kubotan in there, let alone any blade.

I find that folks 55 and older don't seem to care when they notice I'm carrying a knife. It's the younger people especially who will blurt out "why do you feel the need to carry a concealed weapon?" when they see my knife. It always sounds so mellow dramatic to me when someone calls it a "concealed weapon."

Guy at my office asked me that when I pulled out my mini grip to open a box of printer paper. I told him that I would probably do more harm to someone with my old heavy stapler.

UpNorth , I am most likely in the " city" you speak of. I carry clipped all the time , but if I have any doubts (ie; police station , lots of security ,etc.) I drop the folder in my pocket. I haven't had any issues , but better to not get ones EDC snatched. I've been in Tim Hortons cutting a sandwich with my Dozier , and 2 leo's looked at me and walked right past.

There are a lot of knife crimes in this city , so no matter that I look clean-cut , I'm over 50 , and have some common sense , I prefer not to attract attention to myself. Most people are glued to gadgets nowadays anyways and don't notice others much , but the knife paranoid-types are out there and wouldn't hesitate to report your " carry" so they feel safer ,lol.

Know your rights for sure , but remember when your on private property , it's their turf. They can ask you to leave , but have no right taking your knife.

I have done a similar experiment here with a 5" fixed blade in a leather sheath on my belt. No one at the gun store , Cabelas , or other outfitter noticed or said anything , but when I went for a walk in the mall I had a lot of looks at my hip. Been to my son's elementary school many times with my Endura clipped on. No drama from anyone. Same goes for trade college ; not an eyebrow was raised.

In Canada, you cannot carry any type of weapon for self defense.... ANY. A kubotan has no other purpose other than defence/attack. You can't carry bear spray either, unless it is for "dogs". We taught situation awareness and "weapon of opportunity" recognition.

You can carry a kubotan all day long all over Canada (other than on a plane or at the courthouse).
Check it out with the cops or a lawyer if you like. :)
How it goes down is it's a keychain, as long as you aren't hitting people with it.

(the weapon thing actually goes down as being "for a purpose dangerous to the public peace", etc. etc.; people HAVE gotten off on having for self-defence, with it being adjudicated that such was not dangerous to the public peace. Of course, sometimes it went the other way in court...court isn't fun. But that's an entire different ball of wax, beyond the scope of this thread)

Yes, maybe I over due it a bit. But my wife is a teacher and works with small children. We are aware of and have participated in lock down drills etc. I understand public safety protocols and associated fears. We all come to the table with varied experiences and comfort levels. I just prefer to keep it all very low key.
:)
A few years back I approached a table of RCMP to inquire about the roads. As I walked up to them at the Timmies, I heard a female officer whisper ''He's got a knife''. In reference to my beloved 110. I try to tailor my carry to the situation. I don't wear a folder to the shower, so not having one in certain circumstances is perfectly acceptable me.

Cold steel voyager, right? And I'd like to try this experiment in my town, but it might be a bit dangerous considering locking folders are technically illegal. Nice thread, I like the discussion.

wait, what ? , I didn't know locking folders were illegal anywhere in Texas.
