Darby and I were talking and the subject of "Published" knives came up. "Published" knives are knives that are or were published in a knife magazine, Knife World, or one of the Knives199?-1999, 200?. Post up some pictures!! I don't think I have any knives that were or are published. How about you guys?
Please give as much info with the pictures as you possibly can. When made, blade material, size ect.

Hi nifrand,

Unfortunately I don't have any published knives - at least not to my knowledge - but I sure look forward to seeing the pics of those that do.

I do have a related question for you, Darby and everyone else: Does the fact that a knife has been "published" make it more valuable to ? Would you pay a premium for any knife just because a picture of it has appeared in a magazine or knife annual? If you would pay, for example, $1,000 for a particular knife from maker "x" whose work you have long admired, how much are you willing to pay for the exact same knife after it has been published in the Knives annual?

Cheers,

Roger

I get to cheat a bit. All of my knives have been "published". Not bad for someone who doesn't make knives! But since I photograph them everyday, I get to do a bit of trading and have built a nice little collection. But to answer your question, I for one enjoy having the knife that is in the magazine. It may not add to it's value but it is a little bit of joy added. I keep a copy of the publication just so who ever is going to get the knife after I'm gone will have a a bit of documentation about the knife. But collectors value is something I don't worry about. I use every knife I get!

I think knives that have been published have some extra value. It's hard to know how much, it depends on many other factors. It sure gives you a nice feeling, though, to see your knife in a book. I have several that include a Moran mediteranean blade that's both on the front page of Master of the Forge and also in the Moran 50 Year book, a Scagel leather & stag hunter that's in the Scagel book, and a knife that appeared in one of the Knife Annuals with a blde by Daniel Winkler and a beautiful handle carved in the shape of a fairy by Paul Grussenmeyer. Sorry I can't post pics.

This one was published in an article about Kit Carson in Blade Magazine in (I believe) May '99.

The knife is very valuable to me, not because of the magazine article, but because I received it from Kit a few years back at the Blade Show and it stands as a reminder of good times spent with a good friend.

The knife is made entirely of Daryl Meier's damascus and is one of a kind.

I've got five knives that have been published. They are:

W.D Pease Stag folder, engraved with a Buffalo by C. Meyer. Featured
in "KNIVES '97", used in Mr Pease's ad and the ad for the Chesapeake show.

W.D.Pease Stag folder. Engraved with a Wolf and Bobcat by C. Meyer
Featured in Weyer's "POI V", and "KNIVES '98".

Don Lozier Stag fighter, engraved with a Carachal (African cat) by C.
Meyer. Featured in a "BLADE" article on embellishing knives.

Ricardo Velarde Stag handled dagger. Engraved by Julie W., featured in "BLADE" article on Ricardo.

The last one is a small fixed blade that was a cover knife for "BLADE" or "KI", in 1994. I'll have to dig out the issue to find the maker.

The Peases and Lozier were knives that I had input on and am proudest of.

here is a Weiler saex I recently aquired. It is on page 69 of Knives 86. Very sweet knife:) I confirmed the pic because both the picyured sheath and mine have the same mark on the leather sheath.

Of the several that have shown up in publications this one has been the most prolific that I own.
Knives 1999 or 2000
Blade
KI
Knives International
German and Japanese publications.
TKCL Calendar
Dellana's website.

The latest for me was this dagger by Audra Drapper that I picked up at Blade last summer. It showed up in Knife World a couple of issues ago in an article B.R. Hughes wrote on Audra.

Roger, that is an excellent question! I suppose one could extend it further to include knives that are displayed on the makers' websites...I for one would pay a slight premium for a "published" knife and I think I would be more inclined to keep it as well (not that I sell any of my knives  )

So far I have been pretty lucky in that I have not sold a Custom that I ordered or purchased for my collection. So whether the ones I own are published makes no difference to me other than the ego trip of something that you have being shared with others.

Roger, the Dellana folder above was ordered in June 1995 and showed up on my doorstep in October 1997. As with all of her knives, it is sole-authorship including the bezels, settings, and forging. The action on the knife is nothing short of incredible she builds a knife first and foremost.

The sound when the blade locks up is like nothing on a knife that I have encountered. If you hold the knife vertically tip up and fully depress the rear of the lock bar the knife falls quickly to within 1/5" from the closed position. It then deaccelerates and closes gently the rest of the way. There is no wobble when the lock is disengaged. Blade is 3" long by 11/64" thick made of 320 layers of 203E and W2. Bolsters are 112 layers of N200 and 1018. The pin stock and stone settings 14K gold. The handles are black lip m.o.p.

Thumbstuds are set with 4mm AAA Amethyst. Along the backspring she inlayed three of her signature gold dots, set 4 diamonds and 2 emeralds. The large stones at the rear of the lockbar are Rhodolite Garnet pyramid cut cabs.

The knife is nice, but what I treasure most of all about it was the friendship that has developed with Dellana and her husband Van Barnett, but that is true of the majority of my knives.

Gus, never mind the folder...you already know how I feel about that dagger...AWESOME :)

First,Gus, the Dellanna is truly beautiful, I've been back to that quite a few times.

Here is a picture of the Lozier, The engraving is an African cat the Carachal, a Cougar with long ears. Chris Meyer and I have collaborated on three Stag fighters with big cats. First was a Pease
double edge dagger with a Tiger, second a Broadwell with a Cougar and this one. I'm looking for the next maker so the theme can continue.

Hey all,

I have a knife that was pictured in an issue of Tactical Knives. It was made by Ed Schempp for the 2000 OKCA rope cutting competition.

Here's a link to a picture of the knife. It's not a great picture but one of the better ones I have managed to take...:D

This one's gorgeous. It's also in one of the Point of Interest books, IIIRC.

Come to think of it, I did own a knife that was featured in a magazine: this little knife by Big John Fitch appeared in an issue of Blade magazine in an article on small forged tacticals. A very well-finished knife with some very nice stag.

This was my first custom, and it appeared in one of the earliest editions of Knives Illustrated. It's by Sean McWilliams in forged 154CM, nickel silver and ebony. It's 13" overall with an 8 1/2" blade. If I recall correctly, the piece was made around '85 or so......Sorry for the crappy scan.......it's MUCH nicer in person.
