I used to think that way, but I've since come to realize that usually, it's no harm. Obviously, I won't use a knife dripping in blood from cleaning game to cut cooked food and I do try to keep a dedicated knife in the toolbox for greasy/ mechanical chores (and I usually don't use the blade on my multi-tool for food prep), so that's not a worry. You would be surprised what some of the house knives at restaurants and food service locations are used for, in addition to food prep (and how poorly/ irregularly those may be cleaned).
