Puma does it again!

It's really sad to see this happen with a knife manufacturer that made such fine knives in the past. I have several (6) "green box" Pumas that are all of excellent quality. The newest of these is 1988 or 1989 production. Even though they did not use a "high" grade steel, they did a very good job with the heat treat. In fact, one of these folders outperformed my BM 556 (440C, and BM claims 58-60 Rc) in a recent cardboard cutting test I did. My brother has had similar results with his Pumas, in that they do better than many knives out there.

I have purchased two Pumas in the last few years, which would fall under Puma's "new" manufacturing philosophy. They are definitely of lower quality in terms of fit and finish, although one of them, the Duke, was still a nice knife. I have not tested the steel to see how they compare with the older ones. But then again their prices have come down a lot as well.

At one time I had a nice collection of stag handled pumas, both folders and fixed, all made in 1981. They were of excellent quality in both fit and finish with hair popping factory edges. I sold them all a few years ago to a puma collector in Missouri with the exception of a White Hunter my folks bought for me from the factory in Germany. The current pumas dont hold a candle to the older knives. In my oppinion the current knives are living off the old puma reputation which will soon fade away.

I have a number of Pumas, ranging from pre-'64 to about 1998 production. I don't have any of their recent offerings, nor do I have any inclination to get one, quality has definitely taken a turn for the worst. The older Pumas are all very high quality, and their stainless, being roughly equivalent to 440B, outperformed one of my Benchmade ATS-34 blades in a head-to-head comparison cutting cardboard and whittling pine. At least the older ones used hot-rolled steel and drop-forged blades, and they seem to have gotten the heat treat right. And the older carbon steel Pumas are significantly better than their stainless blades. It's a shame to see the recent change.
