So surfing the net I came across a knife I'd like to get, Puma Hunting Pocket Knife II, it has a nice spear point and then a saw with a cap lifter and screwdriver combined. Being partial to knives equipped with screwdrivers I found it's only retailed in Europe so I searched the auction site and the price of 160 dollars appeared less than what it sells in Euros and it's made with 440A.
Anyway, my understanding is 440A isn't a great knife steel, maybe alright on something sub 50 dollars. Any opinions? Would you pay $160 for an otherwise quality knife with 440A steel? Here's a pic from the Puma European site.

Don't know this particular model, but Puma has traditionally been a good brand making good knives. I'd take a look at the Boker Plus Tech Tool City models. They use 12c27 stainless which I find to be a really good steel. Have lots of models from single blade to multitools like SAKs.

440A is the lowest Carbon member of the 440 family (A, B, and C). 440A and B (medium Carbon) are used intentionally on knives designed for chopping as they are less likely to chip out. 440C is the high Carbon stuff which can be taken to the highest Rockwell hardness, holds an edge the best, and is the most expensive to buy and to fabricate.

The Puma SGB knives use 440A. These are made in China. The steel reportedly (by Puma) is sourced in Germany. I would assume if it is a fairly recently manufactured knife, it came from China. It would take a lot of convincing for me to pay $160 for one of these knives.

The knife is not made in China

How exactly do you know that? The SGB Pumas say "Germany" too.
I'm pretty solid it's German. On their website they list Puma as being Solingen, Puma IP as a partnership with Spanish companies and Puma Tec, while not saying on the website, from other sources those are Chinese.
I've been thinking 440A shouldn't be on a premium knife or atleast any knife over 50 dollars. The Pocket Folding Hunter seems real nice but I'm seriously think I'll have to pass on it as best I can tell, 440A isn't as good as 420hc, and with all the inexpensive Bucks with 420hc I just can't see spending so much for a knife with a lesser steel.
