It's all relative. To someone who has only seen the current production, some of their models aren't too bad. They only seem bad when compared to what Puma used to produce. I only wish I had bought more of them back then.

I have have several Puma"s both old (green and yellow plastic boxes!!) and new. There is a huge difference,. The new ones are not trash when you compare them to other company's knives but when compared to old Puma's they are trash....

Hmmmm how sad, my first folders from the early/mid 1970's were Puma's in the green and yellow plastic boxes.

Both were very traditional, brown "wood" looking bolsters and brass end pieces..........beuatifully made, great lock systems I seem to remember, nice big chunky blades that kept a real edge............gave them both away I seem to remember.

One had two blades, one demi-bowie and the other blade a drop-point. The other knife had a bowie style blade, probably the wrong description but you should know what I'm trying to say hopefully............

I transitioned thru' Buck's, Kershaws and now to Spyderco's predominantly.

VERY sad when a great knife maker goes to the dogs but a lesson for all.

Quality, quality, quality...........you don't have it then you're wasting your time and on a path to a long, slow death of your business. :(

I have a few folders and fixed blade. My recent Stockman, etc, are nicely done - even the Micro-Stag. My only recent folder with something other than stag is a gentleman's knife with thuya burl - it split, requiring some thick CA glue - I wrote that off to a natural scale problem. My 'new' folders from Puma:

My only old/new comparison is my White Hunter vs new Original Bowie - comparing 70's to recently. The blade material looks/behaves similarly, and the construction, 'handmade', is similar, too. The older stag is nicely darkened - as are the rivets. Sorry, I just cannot buy that Puma bites the big one now - I think they still make a fine product - in Germany, if you avoid their 'IP' brand.

Stainz

PS My only Puma needing a new home is the 'Sportec' - a more modern folder I just don't care for. I also like US-made Bucks, fixed and folders, and lots of stuff from MI's UP, starting with earlier Marbles. I have Kershaws, one BM Gryp, and a Spydie, not to mention my Vic SAKs. I'd rate my Pumas up with the average or better of the knives I have.

Looked at a couple Puma folders at Cabela's last fall----quality was on par with the worst Pakistani junk I've ever seen----with the kick in the teeth $100 price tag.Unbelievable.

They are just trading on the name now.
