I just bought a water purifier for a hike thats coming up and I just ran some water threw it for the first time and at first the water came out black and then it was clear, I ran alot of hot water threw it and filled up a glass and the water looked clear but when I looked in the glass I saw little black flakes floating around. is this normal or what. also theres black streaks in the rubber hose that carries water from filter to the canteen. Is there something I need to do to break it in or clean it up/out before I use it.......

What you are seeing is some loose charcoal from the filter. This IS NORMAL for a new unit. In fact, in the instructions that came with mine, it was stated to expect this. Just run some water through it and you should be set to go.

Don't worry about the charcoal. If you drink a little it will just absorb toxins in your digestive tract.

I always keep some powdered charcoal around as it is the prefered treatment for many poisons, where regurgitation is not a good idea.

I would assume the charcoal would be from a wood soure...any kind in particular if I wanted to make my own powdered form for the same detoxing purpose? Any specific instructions?
