I sent an e-mail to S&R asking when they are expecting to get their Emerson Police Utility knives and they said in about three weeks, they also said I should be aware that their prices are higher at the store than their website? Is this realistic? I mean it makes no sense to me. Besides, on their website the knife I am talking about is $170CDN, is that too much?
I mean why would they charge me more if I buy at the store? I really don't understand this. Somebody enlighten me please

I need your opinion.

If you're talking about the S&R knives in the Woodbine Mall, haggle over everything. I was there last year and got a couple of knives-I didn't pay full price for any of them. It's a strange store, but if you can get what you want go for it. I've never dealt with them over the internet, so I don't know what they're like in that respect. Best of luck.

There are only two types of people; those who understand this, and those who think they do.

I just talked to Rodney (the R) an hour ago about the availability of a fang and he said that a separate company ships the knives from internet orders. The price listed is lower but you must pay shipping, etc. Agreed, haggle over everything at that store. They will bring the price down some.

When was the last time a web site called you up and said, "That knive you've been waiting for arrived yesterday?" When was the last time you surfed over to your favorite web site only to find that the knife you want is sold out, but then had a big message pop up on the screen saying, "Misko, oh, it's you! Those knives have been very popular, but we knew you'd want one, so we set one aside for you. I'll fetch it from the back room stash for you?" When was the last time your favorite web site called you up and said, "There was a guy in here yesterday trying to sell some knives. It's the sort of stuff you'd be interested in. We told him that one of our regulars is a collector and would probably call him. Here's his name and number?"

Does your favorite web site bring out eight or ten pieces of the knife you're interested in and let you look through them and decide exactly which one you want?

For quite some time, I was obsessed with the sound of a balisong. I just about drove poor Mr. George at George and Son Cutlery in Downtown Portland crazy looking for balisongs with pure notes.

Does your favorite web site give you all the insider information?

Does your favorite web site's owner come out and greet you and spend a half-hour or so discussing knives?

It's service you're paying for. I think it's worth it and will gladly pay a bit more at my favorite retailers.

Besides, there is what I call "The Instant Total Gratification Factor" that comes when you can walk out with the new knife right then and there instead of waiting for UPS to smash the package to bits and deliver it over two weeks late and then refuse to issue a refund because refund requests must be submitted within two weeks of when the package was shipped (gee, I wonder why it took 15 days to deliver that package?). But, that's another thread we've already done.

I know exactly what you're saying, and I agree with you. I guess I will go to the store in a few weeks and get the knife directly from them.

I dunno, first the currency thingy and now this. As far as I'm concerned, I buy knives in a perfectly competitive industry. Whoever has the lowest price and isn't too far away, wins. Money is more important to me than service (at least to a certain extent). We really need S&R to explain themselves about the currency thing as well as the price differences between website and in person. Misko, would you happen to know if I could buy something though their website but pick it up in person?

As I mentioned in yesterday's post, I talked to Rodney about a Rekat fang. Last evening I purchased that fang and he did match the internet price. So a little negotiation goes a long way.

I would love to buy a knife at a retail store, but i live in Southern New Jersey. The only kind of knives we have are cheap knock-offs of good knives at Wal-Mart, gun shops (I'm surprised they don't have any decent knives at the gun shops) and a leather store in the mall.. (One even looks like a Benchmade, i think it has a crappy butterfly on it, but it's enameled aluminum!) Therefore, I had to order from the internet.

There really is nothing like handling a knife before you buy it. It really is worth the small increase in price to me.

I think Gollnick's post covers all the bases.
I've bought a few knives at S&R, and as a knife newbie, I relished the chance to browse and chat. Both owners have also spent quite a bit of time with me on the phone. This doeesn't mean I'm going to throw money at them, but I do appreciate the extra service aspect and what it costs. Internet is nice--and less overhead--if you know exactly what you want and don't mind the (slight) risk. But I tried out three different BM 710's before picking the one I bought. S&R is a good (and rare, in this country) store--keep'em in business.
