Today I went to a local camping store to see if they had any of the new models in, hoping to get another JYD2 or the Groove I knew they had in stock. Neither JYD was there, but I saw the Ener-G2 and knew right when I saw it I was leaving with less money than I walked in with.

I'm pleased with the knife. I've handled a lot of comfortable knives from Kershaw, but the ergos just felt a little off for my hand on most of them. This one feels perfect in the hand, no complaints at all as far as ergonomics are concerned. You can also choke up and use the area where the flipper would be as a choil.

The flipper mechanism is interesting, kind of like the JYD2's stop pin arrangement. I like these small, innovative touches Kershaw has been putting on their knives lately. I wonder if there is any notable difference in strength using this kind of stop pin compared to a tradional one.

The factory edge on this is good, with hair popping sharpness and a pretty good angle for the edge bevel. The shape and grind appear to be well suited for a variety of EDC tasks. The tip gets nice and thin, more so than my Spyderco Military I edc. I look forward to putting this one through some use over the next few weeks.

Congratz on your knife. Im waiting for mine to arrive in the mail. This little write up makes waiting that much harder.

The picture is good but not incredibly sharp. Does it say "Ken Onion" under the Kershaw name on the blade? If so, hang on to that one.

Yeah, it's an AUG07 model and says Ken Onion, with no mention of the real designer.

How well do you like the flipper action on this one? I'm leaning towards this one as my next Kershaw.

That's probably the biggest drawback so far, that the flipper is taking me much longer to get used to than it did for my Groove or JYD2. It's not a bad flipper, it's just more of a straight pull back than a push towards the handles like I'm used to.

Can someone name me a knife that has increased in value over time due to an engraving mistake?

Just wanted to report that the action has become much smoother after seeing use and being broken in. I'm also finding the flipper much more intuitive to use now. It's a close call between this and the JYD2 for which knife I like better. This knife is more comfortable to hold, fits in the pocket easier etc, but the JYD has a more secure grip, plain G10 scales (My preference), opens more easily and I prefer its blade shape. They're both excellent values though.

Has anyone with an ener-G tried removing the inserts? I thought about doing it since I prefer the feel of G10 to the inserts, but I didn't know what the texture would be like underneath them and how easy it would be to clean up any leftover adhesive on the handle.

I'm not sure what texture is under the inserts but as far as any adhesive left behind, most hardware stores or auto parts places carry adhesive remover....like removing bumper stickers. Works like a charm on gummy adhesives.

Pretty much sums up my thoughts on the two knives. ENER-G2 is more ergonomically versatile in a variety of grips, but in a typical saber or hammer grip which I use probably 98% of the time, the JYD2 is outstanding.

I like the Trac-Tec, but have found that it's pretty hard on pant pockets on the clip side. Since the portion of the handle under the clip isn't contacted by the hand, it seems it could be eliminated.

Thomas ... any chance Vivi and I and anyone else interested could get some plain G2 scales for the ENER-G2? Maybe they could be pulled from production before the Trac-Tec portions are milled (well, I'm just guessing how they're made of course.)

I went ahead and took off one of the inserts. It's untextured G10 undeneath. Not as grippy as the insert but it would be a little easier on the hands and pants. I wonder if there would be an easy way to texture the G10 yourself? Another option might be to sand down the inserts. Would of been nice to have plain G10 scales on this one really. I think I'll keep the inserts on for now and if I can think of some way to texture the G10 I'll give that a shot.

Or you could make replacement inserts out of something, maybe some nicely figured wood, to fill the recess where the Trac-Tec was.

I've seen stock G-10 on the net before in different thicknesses.
If you could find some about the same thickness you could always
use the inserts as a template and epoxy the new G-10 into the scales.
Different colors...could be really cool looking. ;)

A laser cut piece of stainless would look beautiful. It would match the blade perfectly. It would have to be scored in places for some grip, like the checkering on the front of a Wilson .45 handle. Any machine shop should be able to do this for a few bucks.

After thinking about this, I might have to get ANOTHER one to try this out. You guys cost me money....

Please post a pic when/if you do this. I think it would look awesome.
