purchasing a new knife... need oppinions.

Once again, thanks to everyone for the help.I looked at the BK&T line but I prefer the style of the F1.bigcustom,I found a supplier in ottawa, which is'nt to far,but they are selling the F1 for 260.00+tx.I will check on some of the suppliers you suggested. And thanks again.

Once again, thanks for all the replies.I like the style of the A1 so I'll try to locate one.I found a place in Ottawa but they are selling the A1 for 260.00+tx.cn.The search is on.

Like so many of you, I think the BK&T knives are an excellent value. I prefer the Crewman model, simply because it's relatively compact size (actually a 5.5inch" blade) render it more likely to be carried than its larger counterparts. It's kinda like the bulletproof vest theory that says the best vest in the world is useless if u aren't wearing it when u need it. Anyway, I have removed the factory grips and replaced them with wrapped paracord, then applied a couple of coats of superglue to solidify the paracord grip. I have done this to both of my Beckers, with great results. The knife feels great in my hand, and it is easier to carry (or conceal) with the far more streamlined paracord grip.

Can I ask the obvios question that appears to have avaded my fellow forum memebers? What do you plan to use the knife for and under what conditions?

I can't believe no one has mentioned Ranger Knives' RD6 yet. It's kind of a big 6" knife, but you just might like it. I just got my Ranger RD7 the other day, and a better all-round knife I have never seen. The RD6 runs $89.95 direct from the maker or $79.95 at Sage Creek Outfitters

(the RD6, RD7 and RD9, respectively) Picture thanks to Wolfen, over on KnifeForums.

The Ranger RD's, fine knives all, are not, of course, "stainless." The pictures (Thanks!) also show that they are not notable for a fine point. I can attest to the fact that their handles give a different feel than the rubber materials used on the Outdoorsman or Fallkniven base models.

It is always nice -- one might even say necessary -- to be able to actually have the tool in your hand before buying.

(And chrisjgilmore, the powers of the forumites are such that we can avade the obvios and still give advyce. :D )

I was looking at a simillar knife in the Becker line, the cm bk-7 to be exact. My next question would be about those slab sided handles. Will the rivets get loose and how is the comfort of the handle.I still would like to have the Falklkiniven A-1 but the price is above my budget right now. Also, what are the opinions on the Ontario rat-7.

The becker handles are not riveted on...they are held on by hex screws and nuts (small hex bolts and nuts). You can also order the micarta slabs direct from camillus for 27.00 including shipping.

As for the Rat-7...nothing wrong with that knife as well, but you might be better served by the new rat-5 or the Tak.

 Tell me something, did you guys have as much trouble deciding on a knife?I dont think I have ever looked at this many knives in my entire life.some one show me a sign!

After some reading I'm starting to get fmilliar with some of the different steels used, but the one used in the bk-7(0170-6c high speed carbon.)Can you make a comparison to the other steels used?

That price sounds high, even Canadian. At allaboutpocketknives.com they sell for $137.28, U.S. dollars, with kydex sheath.

The problem is the U.S. companys wont ship to Canada.I have seen the A-1 selling on a Saskatchewan site for $295.00.Thats why I'm looking at the BK-7.

You won't go wrong with any of the knives mentioned so far. I can't ever decide exactly which knife I want, so I just have a list I am working my way down lol that is what actually got me started as a knife dealer.

LoL,thats a great idea. Now to try and convince the wife on that.So many knives and so little time.I think I'll start with the bk-7 and go from there. Thanks alot for your help everyone,I guess thats all for now.I off to order that bk-7.I'll still be lurking around, learning some more and asking questions.See ya soon.

If the Canadian prices are actually as high as you are saying, you really should look into becoming a knife dealer. There are several wholesale distributors you could deal with and make a killing while still selling for less than your competition. Unless there is some type of Canadian tax that I don't know about that would cause your pricing to have to be as obsurd as that which you have been relating. Once again, I will say that you should look up Cliff Stamp here on bladeforums and find out where he gets his cutlery.

Go and see knifezone.com.They have a pretty good selection and you can get an idea on our prices.Thats where I'm buying the bk-7 from.

Also, whats involved in becoming a dealer?Sounds like a good way to earn some extra cash.

I don't know what is entailed in Canada, but here in the US you just file your business with the secretary of state for your state, apply to the irs for an employer id number, and get tax id numbers from any municipalities that you are going to be doing business in.

There's an Outdoorsman for sale on Ebay for $139.99 and it's steel is San Mai III. If you like this knife, go ahead and buy it. It's an excellent deal for the price.
