Hi Knife Knuts,
How about a cord- wrapped,no ray skin, Kumo with a traditional blade shape? Done in the Spyderco way, of course. Tell Sal.

Black Flag,
Yes, like a kozuka or a kwaiken. Those classic blade shapes are awesome.

I hate the american tanto. The traditional tanto shape is so much nicer.
I would like either a paracord wrapped or with simple scales Kumo.

What about G-10 with a samurai wrap pattern? A Hartsfield epoxy wrap would work too. It never stops, this knife stuff, and that's good.

RJ does kozukas and kwaiken, so I would be interested in another collab with Spyderco to do a blade in one of those styles. Wonder what steel might be used for a chisel grind like that?

Paracord has to be the cheapest, crummiest choice of a handle a working knife could ever suffer.

Paracord says two things to me. Mall Ninja or the maker is two cheap to put a decent material on the handle...often charging a premium for the "privilege".

Black Flag,
The steel question is interesting. I would like S30V, not because it's the NEW steel but because it cuts really well. Do you have a steel of choice for the Kumo? OUT.
Lycosa

For its time, the steel used in japanese blades was superior for its strength and its cutting ability. The steel they used was something between 1050 and 1095, so modest by our current standards, but maybe the best analogue would be ZDP, which is superior in cutting ability by today's standards. I'm not normally one to boost ZDP, but maybe it would be appropriate in this case. What do you think?

- Chris

Edit P.S.: As an afterthought, maybe laminated ZDP would be the best way to go, as it would reflect not only the relative cutting power but also the actual design.

hesparus,
At this point I have come to this conclusion on steels. The top steels are all going to perform well. Tool steel, when done right, is a top contender. You must maintain the blade with a light coat of oil. Do research.

I rather take exception to your assumption that I don't know anything about steel, but since you're new here I'll let it go (you'll notice that most of my posts are in the makers forum). As I aluded to in my last post, I don't see what all the hype is over ZDP, but I think it is an interesting analogue.

Blades,
No. At this time I have a custom kwaiken from Larry Mensch. Do you?
Lycosa

Do I have a Kumo or a Larry Mensch?? No, no Larry knives, I have 1 Kumo now, did have 2, but sold one to my brother. I have never heard of Larry Mensch, I'll have to do a search, see what he makes. Do you have a link??
How does the Mensch knife cut?? The Kumo's VG-10 cuts, and cuts some more. The Kumo probably won't "evolve" anymore unless we buy them all up. :)

Blades

Blades,
Larry Mensch is a small town maker. I have a phone #, if you want it. The kwaiken cuts very well. OUT.
Lycosa

I don't need the phone number yet, do you have any pic's of yours??
Thanks!
Drop me an email if you have a pic or two: blades67_ATyahoo.com
Thanks!

Blades

Blades,
I'll get some pics as soon as I can figure out how to do it! Hope you're not in a hurry.I'll pic my Crawford 3.8 frame-lock also. See ya.
