Here is a 9" kitchen knife that I recently finished. It is flat ground from 1/8" stock.

I tend to lurk here without posting much so here's one! And I would like to say thanks for all the knife making tips I recieved here:)

Nice looking knife. I've frequently used purpleheart wood and brass on my kitchen santokus.

Thanks for posting.

Verrry nice job. May I ask what sort of steel you used and where you got it? I'm thinking of making a santoku for my first attempt at a kitchen knife.

Thanks for the comments guys! This is my 9th blade.

Mrnewberry, I used several coats of tung oil and 400 grit wet/dry sand paper to finish the handle.

Photonjunkie, I used steel from a sawmill trimsaw (about 2 1/2 feet in diameter by a couple thousands less than 1/8" thick). I've since switched to 01 (the bowie that I'm working on now is 01). The sawblade steel does hold a better edge than any production knife I've ever bought (and sharpens easier too), but its not as good as the 01 that my friend uses so I switched over. The sawblade steel was the right price for learning to grind and making knifes to put into the "special bucket" :)
After using high carbon steel I would never got back to stainless......except for a saltwater fishing knife.
