Watched the Jon Hancock video at the weurtz hammer in where he dropped knowledge and how to grind. I know Nick wheeler uses that same method. So who else uses that method for bevel grinding? If so can you share a pic of your push stick? I have lots of walnut I could use. Thank you all!

I've tried PVC like nick and various wood sticks, but I've found this works the best for me. I lay the blade across my index finger and push with the thumb. works great!

Yep, best push sticks ever for me. The best thing about them is that I never lose them. LOL

I learned via HDPE pushsticks from a few mastersmiths, who now are using teflon last i heard. I still use hdpe though as finely ground and heated teflon is kinda horribly for ya, and i already ingest enough gunk as is. As i view it, a well designed pushstick just gives better performance, safer grinding, and more precision. Of course some stuff just requires goin freehand, but for bevel grinding its a no brainer.

Like most new guys I've had a heck of a time trying to grind free hand. I'm just having hard time grasping the "how". If your grinding the same angle how does that walk up the grind? Or do you knock down the apex of the last angle (make sense?) I've watched every video and read a ton of threads. And ground ALOT of steel. Just can't quite seem to get it together. Tried this way and it turned out WAY better

I use a push stick when roughing, but freehand, not with a tool rest like I think you are speaking of. It's not an aid to grinding straight or getting a certain plunge, but more to keep my hands from getting burnt and to increase the pressure I can apply. Just a flat stick with a little step on the bottom of the end, to hold the blade spine.
