Pushsticks

I tried the Teflon push stick and quit using it because I have more control and better feel of the pressure with a couple fingers. My grinder runs at 4500 sfm but I usually grind much slower and use a glove to keep my finger cool. My 2 inch work rest is closer to the wheel than the thickness of a credit card and I have never had a jam or pinch. I guess everyone has their own method of controlling their blade. Larry

So Larry do you use the same method as Nick and Tim with the work rest but use your finger instead? Or just go free hand?

Yes, I use one or two fingers depending on the size of the blade in place of a push stick. I always use a small work rest to steady things and I have done it this way for so long now that it would be difficult for me to change the habit. It's all a certain feel you get when you do something hundreds of times...at least it's that way for me. My opinion is that you should do what works best and is safe. Larry

Ok that's makes sense thank you larry

Do any of you have pics of your grinding magnets? I was looking on Amazon and wasn't sure what would work best. I found some lifting magnets that looked good but they were a little big. It really seems like it would help with tapering the tang.

Here's what I use. 100# pull, 10 bucks on Amazon. Works great!

I use the Tim Hancock method of grinding, as taught to me by Erik Fritz. Erik uses hard wood flooring scraps for push sticks. I use scrap G10. I use a tool rest, but I'm going to start experimenting with using a pin for a tool rest.

I wonder why more people don't use this method?
