Put a couple nicks in my RC6

Kinda annoyed. Probably at myself more than the knife. My Fiance told me she wanted fake flowers (she hates when real ones die) for V day this year. So I got some fake freakin daisies and a vase to put them in. Well the stems were too long so I had to slice em. Figured it'd be fun with my nice factory edged RC6. Well, the stems were actually pretty thick hard plastic, and after trying to push cut the stems on the table, a few "nicks" were left in the blade. They may be a little too small to call them "chips" but they're there. At first I was like what the heck, the 6 should be able to handle this, but then I realized just how thick solid plastic those stems were. O well, I figgure after some more use and or sharpening, they will smooth out.

Anyways, I used my Leatherman charge's wire cutters to cut the stems. Even that took some pressure. But it works.

She better like these flowers......

What they said. If the stems are springy, they may just be plastic, but if they bend and hold that bend, they have a stiff wire inside, and that's what nicked the edge.

Well...if cutting through plastic (no matter how thick it is) damaged the edge of his knife there is definitely an issue there. I think though, that there was probably more to that flower stem than thick plastic.

It would be great if the OP can take a look at the flower stems and let us know whether they are in fact just plastic.

And even a thin wire inside IMO shouldn't damage the edge of such a heavy-duty blade.

Depending on the size of the wire and the size of the "damage" I agree with you.

Some pictures might be helpful here.

Don't worry - that won't affect the performance of your blade. But it's kinda weird consedering the thick edges of RAT knives.

I do not know how many of my Dads knives my Mom ruined doing exactly this.
"Honey can I borrow your knife, I want to cut my new flowers?" But never told him they were fake!

easy solution, just tell the ladies if you buy them flowers you will have to buy another knife,so just in case they damage your current one you have a backup. I think I will try this with valentines coming up. It could be win win, but I doubt it.

I'm no Metallurgist, but I highly doubt that the stems were only plastic. I've cut many of boxes, plastic ties, wood, and have never chipped a blade. I'm going with the "wire in the middle' crowd on this one.

You think that's bad? I came home a couple of days ago to see my wife had thrown my Fiddleback forge Nessmuk in the strainer with a bunch of forks and stuff. I pulled it out hoping the edge wasn't dinged up and saw a huge flat spot on it. Apparently she used it to cut up some baking chocolate directly on our granite counter tops. Needless to say I was very upset and sharpened as much out as I could but it will take a few sharpenings before it's completely gone.

She can't use my Fiddleback anymore!

Yeah, they usually all have some sort of wire inside them also. Which is what prob did in your RC-6. My parents owned a large flower shop while I was growing up and they had to use HD wire cutters to cut the stems on those things. Anyway, give it some time on a stone and she'll be good as new in no time at all.

Like others have said, the damage should buff out with some time on a stone or sandpaper. On the bright side, There's no better time to convex the edge than now!

I'm gunna find some of the pieces of the stems i cut and I'll di-sect it and get back to you guys.

Hey.. she liked the flowers!
