Put a magnet in your altoids tin kit!

While I like my tin knife, I got tired of it rattling around. Also, who wants their blade falling out in the woods or in the dark? I had some of those rare earth magnets on my fridge, and used one to secure my tin knife.

It won't fall out when tipped!

Great Idea, and look at the last photo. It even attracts cats! So... How many other uses can we think of for a magnent. First the obvious. If you have a needle make a compass with it.

Thanks, guys! The cat (Cisco Pike) is a real ham, always jumping into frame when I snap a picture.

CoyotePhysics, I suppose a magnet would be handy in lots of ways.

-picking up dropped fish hooks and other tiny metal items
-holding a lid on a cup or small pot
-keeping things organized and easy to find

Here are my thoughts on this. This magnet, a bit of steel snare wire and a floating leaf is a compass, as well as many other things and take up less space than even the smallest compass I have seen. As cool as button compasses are (and I own and use them also), they take up a lot of valuable space in an Altoids tin for their very limited usefulness. If you choose to carry the magnet, I suggest leaving out the compass and adding a bit more foul-weather tinder or something else similarly sized, and more useful. That's just my thought on micro-kits such as these types of tins.
