Put up your Dukes!

I know this is a Duke thread, but that remains my favorite woodsman of all I've seen. I never really wanted one until I saw that one.

Yep couldn't agree more.. A true woods knife.. Although that duke ain't too shabby either :D. Yet again, another killer pair

If y'all could have any configuration of a duke what would it be?

3/16 TT, full grind, white bone linen with a FB carbon fiber bolster.

What dreams may come?

Yes, that damn woodsman Thurin! I just love the black pins with the evergreen burlap.

I have just started to dabble in the larger fiddles. I am really liking the camp nessie. I purchased an amazing woodsman recently. I think overall it was the nicest fiddleback I have ever held. An absolutely amazing knife. I just couldn't imagine how I would actually use it and one other fiddle fanatic really wanted it so I let her go. I just received a camp knife yesterday. I really like it, but I have to decide if it will get a lot of use. I must say I was never attracted to the duke originally, but I am starting to wonder if it might blend the best of all worlds in a larger fiddle. Hmmm...

KephaC,

This guy is 5/32, TT, Bocote over black with a lime pinstripe.

Apologies, I have been meaning to post, but have been super busy lately. I will start by saying that this is currently my favorite Fiddleback, hands down. This guy was picked up from Tha Baron (thanks!) a bit ago and I immediately started to use it for anything I could think of. At home, mainly whittling, minimal fire prep and food prep, and it is surprisingly good at all in my opinion. I took it for a one overnight with friends where it got some more fire prep and cut-up the grill meat duty. Then a week long stay at a cabin, where there was more of all. It works extremely well batoning and I never felt like it couldn't handle reasonable pieces. Chopped branches fine. Cross-cut (is that what you call it) well. Food prep is awesome, still slices quite nice in my opinion even being 5/32. And the Bocote is getting better and better as time goes on.

It feels amazing balanced in my hand and weighs in a tad over 7 ounces. I can get more precise measure if anyone is interested. It is about an ounce lighter than my 3/16, TT Camp Nessie. That knife is also a beauty, but so far, when looking at the two sitting there I have wanted more often to pick up the Duke. I don't have large hands by any means, but I think the handle shape absolutely fits my hand perfectly. I have, what I think are a lot of pretty sweet FBs, but if the house was burning down and I had to grab just one...tonight...it would be this Duke. It is pure awesomeness as far as I am concerned. We will see how the Leuku I have coming changes this, but I really love this knife and so far has been a success for my quest to find a larger "all-rounder" model.

Jared,

That is a beautiful Duke and a very nice write-up. I am glad to hear that it performed so well for you. I am not surprised. The Duke is just a great all around big(ger) knife.

Hang on to that one. 5/32" TT with that wood and the lime pinstripe is a great combination.

Thanks,

Phil

Thanks Phil! It is definitely awesome thus far, I really REALLY like it. I do love the color combo too. I wanted to grab that woodchuck from VolGrad the other day, but I sat too long debating. Bocote is REALLY growing on me which is surprising me given my initial feelings about it. :)

So come on friends help me out. What are the pros and cons of a Duke in 5/32 and 3/16. I thought opinions were our specialty.

Here is my Duke with new RLO Pants

Duke and Osage Woodsman

Both the Woodsman and Duke are in 5/32" and both are plenty stout for anything I need, including thumping it through some firewood. I have larger 3/16" knives (Bishop, Camp), but I do have a 3/16" Woodsman. I will try to do a comparison of the two in the Woodsman to run them through the paces, and tell you what I think. I tend to like the Duke more for a general purpose knife because of the belly. I like a belly on a knife for many tasks, but for general bushcraft work, it provides no added benefit. If you hunt, you will enjoy the belly.

That Duke was in the woods with me a few weeks ago! She went through a couple of owners, then ended up with me, not sure she was ever used until recently! I will try to take her out on the next venture and get some pics! She's a big knife, but really lighter than other Dukes, so she went on a 5 day backpacking trip over Mt. Rogers on the AT in western Virginia. What a great all purpose camp knife!

This isn't mine, but I'd love to see some user pics of this one that was sold last year during blade.

Just a quick pic of my Duke. With it being so busy this summer I am still looking forward to getting this one into service.

awesome!, looking forward to some user pics! I just love the classic look of the handle, and the spalting on that one is phenomenal.
