putting a convex edge on knife

I love convex edges--eventually all my knives will have them. I just sharpen everything on the mousepad or leather and sandpaper. They are all moving that direction and they are all hair popping sharp
Derek provides some pretty good convex sharpening videos on his site. http://www.knivesshipfree.com/knife-sharpening/

Murray Carter (disclosure: a friend of mine) and I have debated convex edges for years. IMHO, his latest convex video gives a solid, credible critique of the convex idea from the flat-bevel camp.

Interestingly, both Murray and Derek are in Hillsboro, OR!

I use sandpaper on top of leather. It works great.

The time consuming part is the initial convexing of the edge. The first time you re-profile a blade can take a long time and you have to be motivated enough to do good work. It takes a certain level of commitment to begin and finish a project like this if you do it by hand.

After you have it profiled to your liking, touching up the blade is easy. One could argue that it is just as easy as any other purely free-hand method at that point.
