Nice pooch there, kis

Thank you, folks. That's Young Bert, the not-right dog. He's a German Wirehaired Pointer, about to turn 11 years old, and a great, if somewhat goofy, hunting and life companion. I got him at 2 1/2 years, after he was returned to the breeder by the owner who was going to put him down because of excessive barking and running away. He was tied to a tree in a backyard all day and most nights. Wonder why he barked?

Even at 11, his prey drive is astonishing to me, and I've had GWPs before.

He's one of those dogs who is a "gift" to you, ya know? :)

We are thinking about adding two more to the plantation, either wire hairs or two short hairs. I've had English pointers before and wow how they can run. We went with setters because the ones we have hunt in closer and do well in the house, but even they are quirky some time.

I never get decent photos of me in the shop or out hiking. (I seem to have a problem with other people getting the camera to work)

I love these threads, I always imagined you being a big chubby guy, probably due to your avatar and the dogs looking like their owners theory, LOL !:D

And there ya are looking all trim !!!!! I musta seen a pic before but ya forget eh !

Yea pitdog, the 4 quarters from that one was 550 pounds at the butchershop. That was an easy one - there were 3 of us and we had a quad to "skid" it to the truck.

Joe?

The Continental breeds are different critters. I prefer them, but they like more attention and want to be more of a family member than field bred setters and pointers. The only pointer I hunted with regularly was GUN DOG cover-beautiful, but wouldn't retrieve. I offered to help train, but...hey, his dog, his choice. Early adult life, I had an English Setter, who was a sweetheart, but we didn't get to hunt much because of economics and other harsh realities.

Without question, the very best gun dogs I have had, on pheasants up here...(but occasionally a partridge covey will show up, and rarely some quail, or a grouse in the woods) have been the wire-hairs. I helped a friend up north work with her Drathaar, who is ALL hunting dog. More...er...enthusiasm...than the two perfect dogs I've had.:) Still great though.

I think the shorthairs have a similar appreciation to being a family member. Lot more of them have been bred, so you need to make sure your dog's line is hunt-oriented.

Never hunted on a plantation. Can't imagine that many birds.

Be safe.
