I just want to add a design or something to the knife I bought from a smith, is there some household tool we could use to mark a knife (made from 52100 steel)?

I'd suggest sending it someplace for laser engraving instead of trying to do it yourself with some household tool that's not intended for the job.

You could force a patina. You can "paint" on mustard in any pattern you wish.
Clean the blade with alcohol, denatured or rubbing. Dry, then use yellow mustard to draw on your desired pattern. It doesn't have to be thick, in fact a thin layer is better, air helps the reaction.
Leave it on for 15, 20, or an hour. Overnight might be what you want. All depends on how far you want to go. It's the vinegar (acid) that will do it.
Wash off after the desired time, with soapy water.
Mangos and other foods will get you some blue coloring.
Do a search here on the Blade Forums, you will find lots of pic and discussions.
