Putting Grip on G-10

Hey guys/gals, I'm sure this has been brought up a thousand times here, but I was wondering, how do you add grip to a G-10 handle?

I got a used and abused strider SnG in a trade and I love the thing to death, but the handle from the previous owner's previous owner smoothed out the G-10 side. Before I start hacking away with a file I thought I'd check in here to see if there are any suggestions as to how to put some grip back on it.

Thanks in advance, J.

Although I have never done it myself (yet), I have read here in a few places that bead blasting it will give it texture. If that is not enough, it has been said sand blasting will give even more. I am a couple days out from putting on my first G 10 handle and I will let you know if it works out.

Hey thanks for the response. Where would someone go to sandblast/beadblast a handle? Is that just some equipment that I should have handy or does somebody else do that? (as in a company or shop).

I would be very careful about who I would allow near a blade as nice as that one, but you can find bead and sand blasters at auto body shops (check the yellow pages for others). The best thing to do might be to start a thread looking for knife makers in your area. There are several in Texas, seems like as many there as anywhere else. They would be your best bet. As a whole, they have been very helpful to me as I have only been attempting to make knives for a couple of years. What area do you live in down there?

First off, before doing anything yourself, you must understand the G-10 dust is really toxic shit. Little kids, dogs, you. Be careful. Wear a respirator and get rid of the crap when you're done.

Second, have you tried contacting Strider to see if they will refinish/replace it for you? I wouldn't recommend a third party for this, as they might just replace the G-10.

I feel stupid, I didn't even think about Strider's ultimate warranty :o I think I'll check that out before tossing $80 at a machine I'll probably only use a few times. Thanks for the reminder, J.

If you want to blast the scale you will probably want to take it off first. Cover the holes or fill them with something the right size, they may have some blow out if you don't. I blast pretty much all of my G10 handles. The cabinet you posted will work, you need a compressor and media as well, AO seems to work just fine.

I'm not saying you should do this if you can get the handle replaced, just saying how I would do it on a knife I made. You don't want to blast the blade or any parts that will be part of the action, so take the G10 off and do it alone.

No problem. Just to clarify, I meant that Strider might replace the G-10, not the person you asked. ;)
