putting our best foot forward

It sounds like YOU'RE one of the non-knife public the OP was saying we need to be thinking of...so I guess it is relevant to the thread.;)
(Doesn't see the relevence...bah!)

thats funny because iv carried a knife for years all day everyday but im starting to just not see the reason anymore, anyone who isnt a knife person acts like your some type of a serial killer, 95% of the cops out there are close minded and biased and dont think that any person should even carry a tooth pick let alone something that can actually cut something, im just starting to lack to see the point of carrying a knife all day throughout town and the city when the only time its nessicary to use it is in the woods.. i went from carrying a knife from time i wakeup to the time i sleep to now i carry a sak and i still feel like it doesnt serve much of a purpose.

I was a knife guy for along time and now i feel like im turning it to just a regular guy
\
dont get me wrong im not dissing any of you guys i just feel like the knives are all turning too tactical and its turning everyone against knife people.. i still like my slip joints

Just dont get me wrong im not trying to start anything with the knife guys, i just feel like society is turning against knives, and knives seem to get more tactical looking everyday wittch makes it worse

You can thank the modern media for that. Seems like 95% of the news is all sensationalized, focusing on catastrophe, explosions, death, and suffering. Chances are that if you hear about a knife on the news, it will be a factor in some sort of human tragedy. I refuse to believe that such instances are the 'norm.'

I don't feel that it is my responsibility to educate folks about knives and their usefulness. However, the onus is on me to use my knives responsibly--as it should be with all who choose to carry a knife, imo. The same can be said of those who carry a firearm, drive an automobile, imbibe alcohol or participate in any activity that has any sort of potential risk factor that may affect others.

My two cents anyway...

So, because society is turning against knives in your opinion, you have decided knives are no longer relevant?

"Society" has changed your mind, and you are asking us to change it back?

Two things wrong here in my eyes. 1. Regular guys carry knives. 2. If you no longer see the reason in carrying a knife any longer, why are you even on this website?

Claiming who here is a "serious member" here and who isn't with 136 posts and a couple months here, isn't right. :thumbdn:

And if you feel members are over-reacting, it's becuase you opened the "putting our best foot forward" can of worms. Using inappropriate language and making sweeping generalizations about another group is not, to me, the behavior of someone giving "people the right idea about knife enthusiasts."

My 2 cents.

if you scroll through you will find two posts apologizing and one that in part explains and elaborates on this "sweeping generalization" and how its not so much a foul stereotype I have bought into and moreover an observation of the type of people hired by one specific company that was made independently of both me and my friend.

just because I am newer to the forums does not mean I am not a serious member of the knife community. I didn't think this forum operated off of petty seniority

if you didn't see those posts AGAIN let me apologize for the language, and rest assured I do not have anything against the blue collar or construction workers or so on so forth. Just the INDIVIDUALS who work with a SPECIFIC labor provider that I have dealt with in the past.

Regular guys ARE knife guys. They are just regular guys that have come to the conclusion that they need a knife to do many of the regular every day tasks they find themselves doing.

Just because knives don't jump out at you in a catalog, doesn't mean you don't like them. I'm a "knife addict" but I only have 5-6 knives. I trade or sell the ones I don't use. Sometimes I'll go months and months without purchasing a knife (and without a desire to purchase one), because I don't see any that jump out at me. I just purchased a custom knife because I've been looking for something for ages and nothing fit the bill. You don't need to be constantly purchasing knives to be a knife person.

I came off in the wrong way, i didnt mean to sound like im trolling saying everyones knives are irrelevant, i just mean the way society has gotten with knives it makes me feel like idk how to describe it, i still feel like knives are important, but where i live they act like every damn thing is a weapon. I have a friend who EDCed a Cold steel AK-47 and used it for work he got stopped by the cops they confiscated it fined him and he had to go to court not once but twice.
I feel like the only thing that is acceptable here are slipjoints. This is the real reason i quit carrying my knife for fear of having a problem with the law for some ridiculous reason.
I actually bought a case sodbuster full size today for 25$ should get it in the mail tomorrow night, i still want to edc a knife i just think that since the tactical thing has started and alot of modern knives look very tactical.. tactical and scary arent the same but to everyone where i live in ND does.

Im also going to be moving to NJ soon due to my gf is getting a job there and my job is willing to transfer me to a place there and i hear its just as bad there.

Im sorry if i came off like a troll or anything i did not mean too, i was just frustrated earlier when i found that my friend had to go through that over something so stupid and it got the best of me. I dont want to make any enemies here. just friends.

Also if anyone knows NJ knife laws id appreciate a bit of info on them since the web is so confusing when i look it up.

and do you think it would be safer to just start edcing the slips instead of locking blades? As far as ik i think i can do everything the same regardless of lock or not.

EDC both, Slippie for when your around sheeple. Then have a locking folder if it makes you happy. Yesterday I carried a slipjoint and a Spyderco Military. I didn't need either one, but I wouldn't have left without them.

the law is what is pushing me and my knives apart tbh

Hopefully NJ will be much better for you. I feel for ya. The state laws should be pretty easy to google to get a feel for what NJ will be like.

I carry one of these on my keychain. Who can be threatened by this?

I no longer care about what the 'non knife community' thinks. I am no longer going to bend over backwards to appease those who think I am a bad person because I don't follow their (largely uneducated) beliefs.

I've read the US Constitution a few times trying to find the amendment where it's illegal for people to be offended. Somehow our society has recently gotten the idea that it is in there.

I carry knives because I will frequently have the need to cut things. I carry a pistol because I am, for the time being, stuck in an area with a high crime rate. I carry both because it is my damned right to do so. If we do not exercise our rights, we will wake up one morning and wonder where they went.

When people make remarks about me carrying a knife and how dumb it is I ask them if their father/grandfathers carried one and if they were dumb, too.

Man, this thread swirled right down the crapper.

Anyway, knives have been around for a long, long time. People pretty much have their minds made up how they feel about knives at this point. I've always seen a pocket knife as something that makes everyday life easier nothing more, nothing less. Others see a pocket knife as a weapon. Unless I am a master debater (LOL), I'm not going to be able to sway someone with my words.

Now, if you take the same person that sees a pocket knife as nothing more than a weapon and put that person into a situation where they need a knife to save their life or the life of a loved one then I think they will see the advantages of having one. Before you jump down my throat, I am not speaking of a self defense situation, I am speaking of something different. Maybe the old article of clothing stuck in the escalator scenario? Does it happen often? No, but has it happened? Yes. Even when someone hits the STOP button on one of those things it doesn't loosen the tension it already has on the clothing. A knife would be needed to cut someone free. I believe that the people who witness or are a part of something like that would feel very differently about pocket knives from that day on. Unfortunately, people don't easily change their beliefs or their minds and something life altering is often the cause for someone seeing something in a different light.

I live in NY, about 30 north of the Bronx, and I've never once run into any trouble for carrying a pocket knife, but it may be because I use good etiquette while carrying a pocket knife. The easiest thing to do is to never remove your knife from your pocket unless you need to. Don't stand up against a building flicking your knife open and closed. Don't be a dick and start trouble when you're carrying a pocket knife (actually, don't do this at all). If you like to drink hard at the bars then it's probably not a good idea to have your pocket knife on you. Sorry, but the drunker you are the more chance you're going to start acting a fool and pull out your pocket knife whether it's to show your friends or you are just so used to fondling your knife you don't even realize what you're doing. Don't bring your knife into places that you aren't supposed to have it, obviously. If you work at a place where you are going to be using your knife in front of customers you should carry a proper knife. You don't need a folding sword to open boxes. If you have to open a cardboard box for a customer don't wave open the Cold Steel Spartan you have in your back pocket. Pull out something appropriate and open it slowly and inconspicuously. There is no need to scare the customer. The absolute best advice I can give is that you act like you don't even have a knife in your pocket until you need it. You should be fine. If someone still has something to say when you use your knife in front of them then just smile, nod, put the knife back in your pocket, and walk away. Why waste your time on the dim witted?

In general I have found that if someone is too stupid to realize that a knife is a useful tool, I just have if you dont like it "$%&* you" attitude toward them. These are mostly the type of people that can barely tie their own shoes let alone know how to use a tool. Ether way I have never suggested that my knives are weapons.
