Puukko Leuko combo

I can see it now. About that, er, nipple. Is the end where the blade inserts open there, and the brass is just a hoop? Or is the end of that fitting closed, so the end-grain of the handle's covered?

Open on the end Tom, so I guess more accurately should be called a ferrule, not a bolster. Still, I generally get a pretty good tang to handle fit, so no sloppy gaps, et cetera. That thick walled brass ferrule is there to keep the handle from splitting should I have to hammer that knife into a tree, or some other such foolishness.

Please don't misunderstand my question about the brass ... I think it looks sweet, and wouldn't be concerned at all about the end grain. I've some old chisels from my Dad with pretty much the same construction - they've lasted beautifully for a few decades.

I've sometimes wondered about using a pipe cap as a bolster, but wondered whether it would look too clunky, and about the metal-to-metal fit between bolster and blade. I've never done any silve soldering, nor do I have the tools.

I don't have any, but Ragnar's new "Wood Jewel" line shore is purty. And at $107 for the set, seems a good value.

Ragnar has a variety of knives on his sight. He is also a gem of a guy to talk to.
Hell, I can't say anything bad about Kellam, either....

Both are quality outfits. I know, BUY ONE FROM EACH!!!!!:D

I have a Jarvenpaa puukko that I got from Ragnar. I just love it. Well-made, nice and solid, gets really sharp, holds a decent edge, has a good sheath, feels "right." I just stropped it, and I have a bald arm. Yesterday, I carved a bow-drill, hearth-board, etc. Very useful. I'd recommend it to anybody.

I think ya' oughta pick up a couple of them Ahti's from Ragnars site and make yer own dern double sheath for 'em.:D

I'm a bit surprised. Esav Benyamin hasn't dropped in yet to tell us about his Jarvenpaa Puukko/Leuku combo. :D (suffice to say, he's had alot of great things to say about it)

Nice Puukko, Sarge! that Pink wood adds a real unique touch.

You choose the wood and provide several hours labor and you'll end up with something people will drool over. Most factory made ones come with plain wood. I'm almost done with 6 that I'm bringing on vacation next week to present to long term friends I city slick with. Wish I had a digital camera.

Sarge do you leave the ferrule round or do you shape it a little?
The copper ferrules I made for the two kardas on my large Foxy Folly were slightly shaped.
I cut off the length I wanted, deburred them, and then layed them down on the old log I have my small anvil mounted on and tapped them gently with a rawhide mallet.
Makes for a really nice ferrule!!!!  :D ;)

I also cheat on the end as I save some of the sanding dust from the handles and mix it with a bit of epoxy until it looks more like wood than epoxy.
Then I fill the 1/32" void I left for that purpose in the ferrule and shape it to a small angle up the blade a bit.
Effectively hides any goof ups and gives a nice waterproof seal to the end of the handle.  :D ;)

Yvsa, my puukko's ferrule ain't round, it's oval. I padded the jaws of a large machinist's vise with strips of leather, and after I cut a hunk of brass pipe nipple to the right size (yes Andy, I said nipple again  ), I stuck it in the vice and cranked down just enough to yield an oval shape to it. I only do round bolsters/ferrules on the handles that imitate lathe turned pieces (for authenticity).

That is a nice set Steve. After seeing Yvsa's set posted above at Gin's house during the SWKK, (the same set Sarge posted a pic of) I ordered a set as well for about $100 when I got home. Really good quality set. The knives pop into the sheath and aren't going anywhere. I guess the price has gone up a bit since then, but still worth it IMO. I have only bought stuff from Ragnar, as the Kellam stuff I looked at was pretty high-end at the time.

I know you have a slew of puukkos Steve, but my favorite is the little one Sarge made for the Ram sale, that looks very much like the one he posted in this thread. Sharp little bastid...:thumbup:
