Puukkos

RifRaf,

I also have one of the JKM's (horn handle) and one of the Kumar Karda's (carved wood handle) that JKM designed.

Yep, he will continue to be missed.

Blues:

My HI JKM Puukko has a wood handle. I likewise have a carved handle version by Kumar.

Any of you guys familiar with Iisakki Järvenpää's line of carbon steel puukkos? How to they compare to Marttiini or Roselli?

I spent about an hour and a half just looking at puukos on two of the links above! Missed lunch dangit! These are awesome knives! I never saw fancy ones before... man, gotta get one now! I noticed that Kellam knives were mentioned earlier. Does anybody have a link for them? Any info would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks, Mongo

Mongo, here it is www.kellamknives.com

The folks at Kellam (Jouni and Harriet) are awesome to deal with. They offer a wide range of puukkos and leukus by several Finnish makers from inexpensive models to expensive ones like the KP line, plus some nice folding knives and customs as well.

El Cid:

Here's my take on the 3 makers you asked about IMHO:

Roselli: Comparable to our own Dozier in this regard...operates a small shop, does most of the work himself and produces a high quality product. (Don't blast me, I did not say his product was as good as Bob's (It's not!) I'm merely comparing his operation to Bob's)

The Iisakki Järvenpää Company has been in business since 1879. More production oriented although some of their stuff has a handmade look. They offer an array of products ranging from moderately good quality to souvenir quality.

Marttiini is strictly high volume, factory production. O.K. stuff but you can get better quality for same or less dollars.

Here's another Puukko oriented web site: Ragnar has been around a long time. He's honest and his prices are very good. I continue to buy Puukko's from Ragnar for everyday use (I have them all over the place)

Attached is a photo of the Tommi JKM sold me that started my love affair with this ancient knife style.

RifRaf, thanks for the comparisons. I really love my Roselli. By the way, great pic.

The Lapp Puukko and Leuku I ordered are by Iisakki Järvenpää and look alot nicer than the Marttiini models.

Pic is from Kellam Knives' site:

Good Choice!

That is a great combination...you can do about anything you need to do in the field with a Leuko and a Puukko like the ones you bought.

One other thing about the carbon steel knives...they maintain an edge for a long time and most importantly are easy to sharpen in the field.

Use and enjoy your new blades!

My friend Jonas from Sweden sent me a KJ Mora knife in stainless with a plastic handle. It is my all around favorite kitchen knife. Gotta love that grind. No worries about sharpening angle. I also owned a Kellam, a model discontinued long ago. It seemed the handle was too short and uncomfortable. Hopefully this has changed on thier newer models. In this day of high tech do it all knives, I would still recommend the puuko to anyone.

Kellam offers several brands from various Finnish makers in various sizes and materials, so the selection is good. I recommend them to anyone interested in puukkos.
