I'm planing on placing an order for a hand forged puukko, those KP Tommi's look awesome.

Anyone have any knives in 'silver steel'?

Lets see your traditional hidden tang knives!

Hi, I haven't ever held or used a KP Tommi, but I've looked at them online and they've always struck me as pretty doggone expensive.

If you go to Ragweed Forge, you'll find Ahti pukkos that are really well made (hand forged) and cost a lot less. Super solid knives.

Recently I picked up a Woodsknife pukko (Harri Merrima makes them, also hand forged) from Cloudberry Market and it's now my favorite puukko -- and under $80 to boot.

I'm a huge fan of puukkos and the Tommis might be great. But you can get a lot of handmade puukkos for less.

My 2 cents.

I have a "silver steel" knife... its not yet entirely complete, but functional anyway. Its one sharp knife! I still have some finishing to do, and I have to make a sheath for it.

I bought the blade from Markku Vilppola, it's the second one from the top: http://www.saunalahti.fi/knivesc/terat1.htm .

The Tommis are propably the most legendary knives in Finland. I've always wanted one, but cant afford it :( And anyway, if I didi buy one, I wouldnt dare using it... Id be too afraid of loosing or breaking it.

Here's my neck knife... Its an Ahti Korpi. Nice, lightweight, pretty sturdy.

Here's a Pentti Kivimäki puukko, from Kauhava. A classic puukko; 4" straight blade, curly birch handle, nice deep leather sheath. Propably my most used knife.

i have one of the Kellam Tommi knives. when i got it i don't remember paying as much as they go for now. i got the tommi major with 6 3/4" blade. at the time i felt a 6" blade was a good compromise for the woods. nowadays after reading about all of your guys magical 4" blades i would go that route if i had it to do over again:o

the knife is very solid with a 1/4" diamond cross section. it still bites deep into wood though. here is the only pic i have of it at this time.

Whiskyjack, silver steel is a great puukko steel. Since most puukkos are forged, silver steel is often the choice when looking for a high hardness blade. There's english and german silver steel, the finnish blades are most often german silver steel. It has high carbon content, some chrome and vanadium for deeper hardening and increased wear resistance. It's close to 52100 ball bearing steel plus the vanadium for tad more wear resistance.

The steel really has nothing to do with silver but I've read that the name comes from the raw silver steel being sold with machined surfaces ie. as shiny round bars. It polishes real nice and makes a great wear resistant puukko blade for hunters. But it's not as tough as carbon steel blades though, you'll have to be more careful with the tip and be careful with all prying and poking. Hope this helped.

Crossada, that's a gorgeous Major Tommi. And that Justin's Hawk ain't too shabby either!

thanks! the hawk is an ATC roger's rangers spike hawk. i do have a modified version of Justins too though:)

Whoops, sorry about that :o (Justin fan here ;))

Oh wait, that hawk might be Justin's after all. He made hawks for ATC until 2003 when ATC screwed him over royally.

Working myself into a buying frenzy so when I sober up out of it I'll have a tommi puukko lol.

They are mighty expensive, but they are might nice too.

I cant really imagine that--performance wise--they're going to have any significant advantage over a much cheaper puukko, aside from the sheath maybe. What could they do differently anyway? Perhaps a distally tapered blade?
I expect most of the difference would be in a flawless fit/finish and hand picked burled wood for the best figure.
Am I wrong?

What do you guys think of the more moderately priced hand forged puukkos, like the AK line? They dont have the showiness, but theyre around 1/2 the price, at least.

I really like the idea of one very experienced man working on the blade, handle and sheath, from start to finish, but I've got myself wondering, what practical differences are there between hand forged blades, and say the Lauri blades (C-0,81 Mn-0,56 S-0,004 P-0,01 Si 0,35 V-0,161 Cr-0,540 similar to silversteel, but lower carbon)?

I have a progression tempered Lauri and the blade seems very nice, perfectly straight, even grinds, good even hamon line. Not sure what could be done to make it better.

The prog.tempered Lauri blades are my favourite economy high performance blades. They're no prybars though.

I like the various Puukko's very much. I have found the best knives and prices at ragweedforge.com--While R carries some pretty knives, along with those are knives that mostly are meant to be knives that work and work hard and are proven over many hundreds of years. Goods prices and good knives.

Pretty soon you realize the pig enjoys it.

yep, you are probably right:thumbup: i got this when around the time when they first came out. Justin made me one of his renegade models with a hammer poll that really rocks imo.

whiskeyjack, my Tommi is flawless in the fit and finish dept. i can't say if they are worth the money as that is a personal thing but you will have a nice knife that is truly handmade and very few people have. if you shoot me an e-mail to my BF profile e-mail i'll send you the vhs tape that came with the knife. it shows the smith making the knife and sheath and some wilderness scenes. maybe 15-20 minutes long but you'll see the work they put into it.

Well, looks like the only option I have is to try them all. It's a good thing I put some money into infi while the Canadian dollar was still on par, seems to be one of the few things that didnt take a dive :p

Gonna have to grab some helle's and a kellam wolverine to begin with. I think the Wolverine uses the Lauri SPT blade. On the british blade forum Kellam said theyre not and theyre made in their own forge, but I put up a good sized picture of one, held my Lauri blank in front of it and it's a dead match.

I've gotta get some birch bark when I go hunting to handle this Lauri blank, birch bark with micarta bolsters, should be pretty sweet.

Crossada, thanks for the offer, email sent
