Puzzled over 0550 scales....

I look at it this way. I had a XM18 and ended up selling it. The 0550 is just as good for a much lower price. Based in that adding a $65 scale is not a big deal for such a nice knife.

I own both an 0551 and an XM 18 3.5" and as much as I like my 0551 I couldn't disagree more with the "just as good " statement

IMHO, I think that part of it is Hinderer wanting people to I have an affordable Hinderer, with the options that XM18 owners have. He is doing it for knife owners just as much as anything else.

I got your back on this one, spydusse. Two very different animals. Each great in it's own right, but a real deal Hinderer takes the crown.
I also agree with the above. It is an "affordable" option.

The issues with the 3.5" XM-18 I owned was with blade centering and a very weak blade detent. None of these problems are present with the ZT 0550. Now, don't get me wrong. The XM18 is a very nice semi-custom knife that will last a life time but still not flawless in terms of construction details. I'm sure that if I worked with Rick the problems would have been resolved but at the the time it was much less work to move on to a custom.

Fixing the centering on an xm is easy. There is a thread in the hinderer forums about it, worked for me. I would like the detent to be a little stronger myself but I believe I read he prefers that incase a flick needs to be used in a situation but that could have been hear say. Still its in a different league then my 0551 wich like I've said I love

I will more than likely pick up another XM18 now that the slicer grind is becoming more popular on the secondary market. Looks like the Gen4 has significant changes also which will make it worth picking up. I will say that the ergos of the Hinderer are a level above the ZT for sure. So far the heat treatment on the ZT is working out well and I'm sure the Hinderer will be even better.

It's my hope Rick will add titaniums slabs for the ZTs in the future. They would rock, IMO!

OK, so the knife is a Hinderer design...which means he had a voice in the scales design as well.
I don't like the pattern myself....I will be replacing it.
But if Hinderer had a hand in the design of the scale pattern (I"m assuming now..), why would he rush out and make a whole line of different colored replacement scales....that look nothing like the stock ones.......it's like he knew the buyer would be beating a path to buy them.
Why not offer them with that new and improved pattern to begin with?
I don't get it, someone please explain.

I can't speak to the why (except for saying "why not?"), but I think the 0550 factory scales have a signature hidden in them. If you look at it just right, the machining seems to spell out "RH" over and over. To see ot, of course, your brain needs to fill in the blanks. Maybe intentional, maybe not. Neat either way.

I see what you mean about the brain....all I can see is a naked couple having sex.
