Puzzling new Opinel.

I have never seen this before. I've bought loads of opinels over the last few years but I've never seen that and can't understand the need for that extra slot.

How bizarre.

Just a guess, I wonder if maybe the slot could allow for just a little room should it get wet and expand and then maybe keep the blade from sticking? Maybe give the wood just enough room to swell out instead of swelling in toward the blade? Just a guess, I'm just trying to think up a purpose.

I think they changed it so that all of us Opinel collectors will run out and buy a bunch of the old version, in case they become scarce and valuable! While we are at it, we might as well buy a few of the new version, just to check them out and see what the tab and slot are all about!;)

I don't have anything to contribute here, however..... with the title of this thread I thought for sure it was about this-

Looks like they have a whistle and a small hammer on them now.
That hammer will come in handy when installing thumb tacks...

We've got 3-6 of these on each of our automated machines at work, some feed screws, others stamped electrical contacts or various actuation components for terminal blocks. These things are wonderful witchcraft, and most perform great. The only picky one we have feeds tiny plastic keying pieces that gather static like wool in the dryer.

Unfortunately its a gut hook. Nothing I want more than a gut hook next to my whistle!:D Oh wait... I don't want either of those things on my knife.
It seems to truly have been designed by a committee

Yeah, that's why I said the title of this thread could just as easily be about this new knife, it is indeed puzzling.

I'm a retro grouch.

No, no, no!
+1

I've been threatening to get another Opi just to use unmodded as a conversation starter. Think I'll run out and do just that.

Info or link on that?

I might be able to tolerate that for backpacking

Ya, at least it looks like a regular blade in that plastic handle. I wonder how hard that gut hook would be to remove and still have it look (as) good.

Getting back to the original post, I think I detect the influence of the product liability lawyers.
