How often do you change yours? I have been chasing scratches in low spots on the tang/ricasso areas on the last several knives. Yesterday I removed the platen and put a straight edge on it. It has a low area in the middle and both ends are worn down about .050. It is only about three years old but that is obviously too old. Jess

Frank, Thanks for your reply. I will change mine more often now. Jess

i have the old steel platten for profiling an save the glass for bevels. one thingthat saves me is the fact that most of my grinding is on 2 inch wide flat ground kitche knives and that really spreads the ware load out. i replaced mine after about 3 years and the new one got a crack in it not much more then a week into use (not sure why) im still grinding with it tho since its not at a bad spot and both pieces have good bonding to the backer

I set the glass face down on a piece of plywood and heated the steel backing with a torch. The galss came off clean and I put it back on with light spring clamps in order not to force out of straight. Sure grinds better. Jess
