I've looked for pyroceramic platen liners locally and havebeen quoted $90 to $150 for a 2" x 8" piece so i'm buying one online. Usa knifemaker is out of them for the next few weeks and i found someone on Ebay selling them in a 3 pack.
Is this something I would change out regularly? Just wondering how long 3 of them would last for a person making maybe 3-4 knives a month.
Thanks

Check out knifegrinderparts.com the guys name is Chaz and hes great to deal with he sells them cheap. A lot of guys on Instagram buy from him. I got mine from him and its the real deal. He has a bunch of other very reasonable grinder accessories. If your on Instagram he goes by the username (pfunderfab). Hope this helps!

I like hightemptools.com He carries the liners for far far less than your local quotes, and is the only source I have found that have ALL the innard stuff for forges and furnaces.

That price is outrages even if you lived in Canada. Go to a local glass store and see what they want to charge you. I've had many given to me when I have had wind shields replaced. I get them to just cut them and then I clean them up with a cork belt on my grinder. When I paid, I believe I was charged about $10 each. You can also buy a very flat smooth tile and use them. If you have a tile, you will be set for life.

A spare is nice to have, as they will break if you set the flat platen down on the concrete floor too fast and hard when changing arms. (Don't ask me how many times I have learned this :) )

3 will last a long time at a couple knives a month. Maybe a year a piece or more if you don't break them. Had mine for 6 months and its still nearly perfect.

The $90 was a quote from Jacks glass. I checked 3 hardware stores that didnt even carry high temp glass.
the $200 quote was the local refractory supplier:eek:

Thanks Jay, I think this is the guy on ebay selling them:)

Thanks Matt and Stacy, good point on them breaking changing tool arms. If they only last a year or so, might as well buy 3.

Also make sure to round the top and bottom of it so the belt slides over it instead of digging in. You can use a ceramic belt, 50 grit, to shape it. Wear a resperator because you don't want to breath glass! You can also radius the sides to help your plunge cuts not be so sharp.

Thanks, I'll be sure to do that.
