We have all seen and a lot of us own a small Altoids type fishing kit, or maybe your fishing kit is just an even smaller section of a small kit (making it one seriously small fishing kit..)

I have seen in the past old "hobo" type fishing kits, which looked like a wooden spool about the girth of a coke can but not as long, maybe 2/3rds the height of a Coke can. On one side of that spool (which is the "reel" with line wrapped around it) would be access to a small storage area inside where you could keep lures and other tackle.

If anyone has seen something similar and has a link/pic of these things please post them here, I'm going to try and design one myself

A little google came up with this:thumbup:;

I answered my own question:foot:

Anyways, feel free to discuss..has anyone used something like this?

What was the site you found that on?? I real think that would come in handy.

wood is an unnecessarily heavy material to make such a kit out of, unless of course your first and foremost desire is for something that is visually pleasing with intricate lathe-work. a 35mm film canister works.

Do some searching in the WSS, and you will come up with many threads on this subject...

The closest thing to what you are talking about, is a guy who used a half liter nalgene to carry the kit, and the outside being used as the reel.

But, when discussing this issue with those who have done 'survival' fishing, or at least fishing to live, as opposed to sport fishing... The concept that comes forward is nets or trot lines, which do not require your presence, they fish 24/7, even when you are not there...

Similar to this, and packable in a kit, is the Speed Hook.

I think this is an unnecessarily heavy and bulky item for a fishing kit. A 50 meter length of line and a small tin or baggie for hooks, sinkers and flies is all you really need.

In my opinion, the only use this serves is as a handle / pole for fishing, which can be served just as well by any stick in the woods. And lets face it, if your stuck in the woods and need fish for food, any stick available will do.

There are an awful lot of sticks in the woods, save the space / weight for something more important.

someone elses suggestion...

i use a champagne cork as an ersatz "fishing reel" in my survival kit.

shove a piece of coathanger wire through the middle of the cork and trim it off (only for strengthening the cork), wind fishing line around the cork, tie a hook on the end and stick the hook into the cork for safety.

voila. small, light and cheap.

When I was a kid, this is the only way we would fish. We would take a piece of bark, wrap 30 feet of fishing line around it, slide a bobber on, tie a hook on and stick an extra hook in the bark. We would catch all of our fish for years in the pond with just this. Bass and bluegill. It cost maybe 70 cents.

At the ponds around my house, this is still how my son and I fish cause it is so easy and you don't have to deal with rods and all that stuff, just throw this in your pocket. I would estimate it weighs about 4 oz and takes up about the same space as the izula sheath. Come to think of it, why not just use the izula sheath?

I use some small makeup containers that I got at Walmart. They are round, and the inside is about the size of a half dollar coin. I have 50' or so of 20 lb line, a pair of small bobbers, and a half dozen small jigs inside. It's packed pretty tight, but I can't imagine what else you'd need to catch fish in an emergency.

:D I agree 100% ...

If your really interested in getting one, one of the guys on the W&SS Forum makes and sells some pretty nice kits made out of PVC pipe with line and some lures. If you can, run a search on the forum and it should pop right up. He's a veryu active member and a really nice guy.

Just picked up a basic fishing kit in a tin from bestglide . Nice small addition to BOB. I hate sites like that- shopping cart keeps filling up. :o

a coke can popper, some 550 chord guts and a worm will do the job, but in a pocket sized pouch I'd carry some varrying jig heads and bodies, some worm hooks, spinners, a cork bobber, some line and a St Croix pack rod.

I like trapping.. it catch animals while i sleep.. it hunt for me at night.

What system should I use if i want a install-and-leave-it-there fishing system similar to trap/wire ??

at the very least, i would

1) get a fishing line (or 1 of the 7 strand in my paracord)
2) tie the line to a fishhook/homemade hook and bait ...
3) maybe use something (a 1 inch stick) as a floater
4) secure the line to a tree
5) just throw in the water and prey it catch fish while im off collecting wood or something...

optionnal step
5) tie 4-5 fishhook to the same line and hope it catch more than one

is this idea acceptable/chance of succes or do you have something better to propose ? im open to suggestion :)
