I just recieved a new USAF pilot's survival knife. The one I have has a metal tip around the bottom of the sheath and it extends up the back. I have seen others whichhave a leather tab which hangs down from the sheath instead of the metal tip. I would like to know what the difference is between these two types of sheaths, and what purpose these differences make. Thank you in advance for any help.

txmoonwolf,
The steel 'flap'on the 'Pilot's Survival Knife' is Mil-Spec. It is intended to keep the knife from poking through the leather sheath should the user fall 'the wrong way' on the knife. Like when you fall out of an airplane

This is a good feature to the product.

Because of market pressure in the super price conscious Army/Navy-Surplus business, the knife is also offered without the steel 'flap', at an approximate $5 savings @ suggested retail. This option was put in place at our customers request.

Same knife, same sheath, one with the steel flap[mil-spec], one without for $5 less.

Thanks for the interest!
