QC dissapointment

Got this Caly 3.5 yesterday noticed that it was really gritty so I decided to pop the blade out clean out some of the crud. Just happened to notice this, it doesn't seem to affect the function the knife, still locks up like a bank vault so I don't think ill send it back. It is kinda disappointing to see something like this make it out the door, this is the first time Ive seen anything like this on a lock bar. This latest Caly 3.5 sprint is puzzling, overall the product works and is solid but it has some serious finish issues that seem out of place on a premium knife. I did buy this knife as a user so its not the end of the world but this just reinforces my belief that Taichung has overtaken Seki City as Spyderco's best foreign manufacturer

It's not uncommon for Spyderco or other manufactures to leave something like a lock bar roughly finished. It's a part that's not normally seen. Also it's important to remember that sprint runs don't have any higher finishing than the normal run, what you're paying for is the materials.

and this has absolutely no impact on function as the spring rides on the smoothed part. total non issue for me.

I'm up to 4 Caly 3.5's, and all of them have a rough lock bar like that. I'm not sure what the point of improving the texture would be. It doesn't affect anything as you say, and it isn't on the outside of the knife.

Maybe I misunderstand, but the CF Caly 3.5 isn't a sprint and is regular production.

My post wasn't specific to this particular knife. The reason I mention it as it comes up quite often here and it's a misnomer that Sprint runs have a higher fit and finish.

I never said it was an issue for me. Im quite satisfied with the knife its such an excellent package in terms of ergonomics and blade steel. I was just surprised to see such rough finishing which I thought was out of place given what I have seen come out of seki city over the past few years. I just think its an injustice to such a great knife design, It has quality steel and quality material I just wish it wasn't put together like a 30 dollar knife

It's not unusual for to see things like that as it doesn't effect performance looking at that price range the knife is in.

If you want a knife that has every part touched you would be looking in a lot higher price range IE CRK etc.

Exactly, the higher prices reflect the higher cost of the materials, Steel (HT and wear on equipment), handle material etc over the standard base models.

We can't really expect Spyderco to eat that expense in selling those said sprint runs at the same prices as the base models.

I know you said it's a non-issue, but I look at things like that to "personalize" my knives. With some elbow grease and time you could have a hand in finishing one of your favorite knives. Granted this voids the warrantee, but so does taking the blade out.

It sounds like an issue for you when you take the time to post on a public forum and lend the title "QC disappointment" to it. If you have an issue with it, that's fine.

Just smooth out that puppy for yourself with a Dremel or whatever, and you are a happy camper. No biggie.

GAAAH, I guess I'm just being anal retentive. I like the idea of making this a project knife, Ive been meaning to get a Dremel for ages looks like it might be a good time to get one.

thaeffman,

You might strongly consider sending that back. Check this post: http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/988278-Caly-3-5-comparison

Pay no attention to the SuperBlue blade, the owner chemically forced the patina. But the QC on those knives are what yours should be like.

I don't have any pics that show it well, but my Caly 3.5 CF ZDP is pretty much textbook perfect. For $140 it's what I expected. My Delicas and Enduras look better than yours. So does my $29 Buck 110.

You said you were satisfied, but your lock spine is way off center. Was it like that before you removed the blade?

Off center on a lock back?

I'm sure that's just the angle of the picture. There's really no way for the lock bar to be off-center.

I'm sure there is some illusion, but I can't get mine to look anything like that.
I don't have that gap on the left side either.
