Does anyone know of a quality boot knife with a functional sheath and proper steel (VG-10 and upwards)?

The ZT 0150 looked like it fit the bill with its S30V steel, and clip-sheath but its been discontinued. Ive also looked at Fallknivens G1, but the sheath lacks the clip for boot carry.

Im not interested in any S&W's or 5.11's. Some of the Gerbers look ok, but i'd prefer another type of steel. Ive looked at the Spyderco Streetbeat too, but i dont know much about it.

What do you recommend?

Thanks guys

First of all i own a ZT 0150 myself and the knife is nice and all but the sheath is "to secure" maybe its me beeing a baboon but im haveing i realy hard time getting it out one handed, and the sheath fall off the boot instead of letting go of the knife and so on, if i wher to start carry it seriously i would have a custom made sheath for it.

Fällkniven G1 im thinking about getting too, but as you say, the sheath is lacking once again. Guess your best bet is to get one of them, and simply have a sheath made for it.

Check out Blackjack Knives: Model 12.

The Spyderco Street Beat is one of my favorite knives, I carry it every day as part of my E.D.C. That being said I have never really considered it a boot knife.
The best boot knife that I have carried and would recommend is the A.G. Russel hollow ground Sting III . A beautiful work of craftsmanship and design. It always seems to find its way clipped onto my boot.

AITOR (Spanish Brand) does have a fine boot knife if I recall correctly. You can have it with a black or satin blade. Maybe worth having a look although I promise you is not going to have a wonder Steel...

I own the ZT 0150 and it's a nice knife, I have no problem drawing it from the sheath. I have handled the Fällkniven G1 and I prefer the 0150 (1- better grip, 2- better steel, 3- better sheath). I think some dealers still has the ZT in stock.

Sorry brother, I keep a Candiru on my boot when I'm in the field as a LDK. It's quality and the sheath is functional, but clearly 1095 is not proper steel ;)

Super curious what people use their boot-carried knives for, but that's for another thread...

Gryphon Knives M10 is the nicest 'boot knife' I've ever held.

Made in the same factory as Fallkniven and Spydercos in Seki City, Japan, it is made from VG10 with FRN handles. You can buy them from Mike Sastre with one of his awesome River City Sheaths.

fwiw- I carried the original AG Russell boot knife longer than any other fixed blade I owned. I had it clipped to my belt though.
I asked AG to bring this one back but with a acid washed blade and a G10 handle with an exceptional Kydex sheath.

The Street Beat is one lovely piece of work. The Gryphon M10--fantastic! If you don't mind going to coated 1095 carbon--how about a $49.95 Izula from KnivesShipFree.com? I mention them because of the Screamin' Eagle model Izula they're selling for the same price as the other Izulas. No boot clips, unfortunately. Say, you go the carbon? Alan Davis told me about Rennaissance Wax, a rather expensive wax that goes a long way. When the first of each month hits, I get out the Ren Wax and wipe down the entire knfe and the sheath. Hope this info has some value for you.

Bud Nealy does make some good knives, combine that with his magnetized sheathing system and you have a real knife for rough carry.

You could go the other direction with a Gerber. Yes, the 420C steel isn't the best, but my thoughts about a god boot knife is that it is't meant for long term carry, but as a one-time emergency use knife. Boot knives just need to be there and ready for that chance you need to stick something fast. After the encounter, you will either need to drop it in the river, or surrender it to the police. Either way, you probably won't be getting it back, so why spend too much on one?

You're absolutely right. And to those who asked, theres nothing wrong with 1095, etc.

The Gerber appeals to the practical side of me. The more expensive knives appeal to the knife and steel afficiando in me. I am trying to combine both in a moderately priced package.

The Bud Nealys look REAL good (but expensive) and so does the Gryphon M10. The ZT 0150 is proving hard to find, but a few deales still have it in stock.

The Gerber Guardian Backup looks surprisingly well made with a nice slim sheath that has adjustable tension and a metal clip. There are a lot of reviews out there, but few are made by people who have actually carried a boot knife in their boot.

ETA: The SOG Pentagon Mini looks like a ok boot knife too.

Are you sure? A quick look online shows a number of knife retailers with the ZT 0150 in stock.

If you are looking for something cheaper I might suggest the Kershaw Military Boot Knife. Very nice 4.5 inch "false" dagger for around $40.

Kershaw Guy on this site has the ZT boot knife I know for a fact because I just seen them at the Oregon Knife Show this last Saturday.

Where's CharlieMike? I'm sure he can recommend some and has most likely made a few.

That's what I was going to post. I found quite a few that are selling the ZT 0150

I found a ZT 0150 on another forum, so i ended up buying it. It should be here this week. Ill jot down some first impressions when i receive it. Im real excited to see if the sheat is well made and functional. If not, then ill probably consider getting a custom sheath made or continue my search.

The best place for a boot knife is on the inside of your weak hand side.

No clip will really the do the job. A lanyard or some sort of tiedown is also very helpful.
