About 2 years ago I bought a knife from Pat Crawford for a friend of mine. It's his only handmade knife and he was a bit skeptical about whether it was worth the extra cost. Well, he's carried it and used it every day, and even abused it some (didn't wash it after salt water use with the expected pitting). Recently, the lock began slipping. I gave it to Pat at the NY show and told him that I thought he should repair the lock, and that I'd be happy to pay for a bead blast refinish, sharpening, and shipping & handling. He took it gladly. I got it back yesterday as good as new! I was really surprised that the final cost was $0.00! I would have been happy to pay reasonable charges for the work he did, but it was really nice to see my friends surprise when I handed him the bill. It was like, "Hey, maybe you're not so crazy for buying all those classy knives after all."

I am glad you were satisfied.Pat is a class guy.But alot of custom knifemakers will do the same thing.I sharpen and polish all my customers knives for free, anytime.I even made a new sheath for free for a customer who had worn it out after two years of use.A good customer base is needed if you want to do this and most of us work by word of mouth.I feel that part of the price you pay for a custom knife is the service you get after the sale.Good luck Dave
