Quality issue or OCD?

Hello,

I was hoping you guys could provide me with guidance. I bought this MKM Flame because I wanted to treat myself to something nicer than what I usually get. I just got the knife and the tip looks weird... like flat or broken off compared to other knives. Here is the tip compared to the Cold Steel Counter Point(bottom) which costs 1/3 of the price:

Is it an exageration that I'm even noticing this? OCD in action lol?

Do I ignore it, try to fix it or bother to return it?

What would you do?

That would absolutely bug me. But I eventually sharpen every knife I have no matter what the price point. For me, that would get sharpened sooner rather than later is all. But if in correcting it things got worse… that’s when it would become unacceptable for me. If you are like me, even if it is a small thing, once it’s on your mind it’s there forever.

Only you can say if you are willing to fix it or kick it back. Just putting up with it was no longer an option by the time you made this thread.

If you are going to use it and sharpen it I would not worry about. If you plan to never use it and just look at it then send it back. You might get another one with the same issue though.

It’s a quality issue for sure. The manufacturer didn’t properly grind that blade evenly.

Return it or use your stones to even it out. I guess it depends on how hard that steel is and how much patience you have.

Edited to add: and nice job rounding out the tip of the blade. That’s horrible.

I would say, definitely not “OCD in action”. MKM Flames are not cheap, and that tip is improperly ground. A QC issue. I would return it and ask for a replacement with a properly ground tip.

I appreciate everyone's feedback. I reached out to the store and they told me they could do an exchange for me but they said they inspected another box and it looked just like it. They offered me a $25 discount on my next purchase if I kept it or return with full refund so I decided to keep it and try to get it fixed. Thanks for all your feedback!

OCD?

The D in OCD stands for disorder. That means that the obsessive-compulsive behavior(s) are adversely affecting your daily life or medical health.

Most knife collecting behaviors do not fit that definition unless you are spending rent or grocery money.

Ask if they will pay for it to be professionally sharpened. Some knife shops do that in-house. By definition quality is based upon the customer’s requirements.

It’s the norm nowadays with many brands. I ordered 3 custom buck 112s and 2 custom 110s in 2024 and 4 of them have an edge like this. Uneven or overground. That’s 80%.
