Quality of different khukuri manufacturer?

I'm going to purchase several khukuri but can't made up my mind on which manufacturer.

I've browsed several khukuri manufacturer's web ( Gurkha House, Khukuri House and of course , Himalayan Imports - which is of the highest quality )

Yup, I know you got what you pay for it but What's the difference between their product? I know HI is of highest quality, nice finish ( mirror polished ) and tough but how about the other 2 ?

I've find some interesting khukuri on the KH's web and it's reasonable priced. The quality seems to be improved since I last browse their web.

I'm buying the khukuris straightly self defence purpose ( the place where I live is full of criminal, unwanted guest and illegal immigrants who often break in local people's house and doing all the bad things )
So I don't want to spend alot on the khukuri .( I'll buy 5 - 6 khukuri,1 put in the bathroom,1 in toilet,1 in my workshop,I in the bedroom, 1 in my van )

That's why I'm considering GH or KH ( although I love the tougher than nail mirror polished HI  ) , does anyone have experience of the GH and KH? for straightly self defence purpose ? edge holding?toughness?

Hope this post will not considered to be an AD for Gh and KH, I'm just a khukuri lover seeking opinion from khukuri experts globally.

Don't want my khukuri snap in half "when the time come"......

Thanks for any advice.

For your self defense purpose, GH and KH khuks shall suffice since human flesh is the target, not wood.

But then....what if the crooks have weapons too.......you may need to parry with your khuk...I'd go for the tougher than nails HI. Plus the mirror finish ,I think, adds to the fear factor on your enemy.

p.s. Welcome ! :)

Welcome. I think you've found the right place to learn about quality khuks. You should hang around and shark a DOTD (deal of the day). The prices on those are almost guilt inspiring. I have two KH knives. They get no use and they are WAY too heavy to be good fighters. They chop wood fine, but don't feel as solid in my hands/cause blisters. I think the steel is OK because I did some pretty extensive cutting tests when I got them. Even cut a penny in half. Still, without question, HI makes the best khukuris in the world. They have more models than anyone in the world. Tlhey've been around the longest, and they have made more than anyone. You'll love all your HI knives. Go quality first you'll thank me later.

I urge caution in stashing weapons around your house.
You could be arming the bad guys should you walk in on them in progresss
of ransacking your place.

I would say that the other manufacturers of khuk would do fine for self defense. However, you might keep in mind that there may be an expensive shipping charge to have them shipped from Nepal. Is GH still in business? I thought they went the way of the dinosaur over 3 years ago. IMHO, your best bet would be to watch out for one of Yangdu's deals of the day. You can save a lot of $$$ and you'll get a knife you can bet your life on. Plus the warrany is lifetime.

I remember the old adage "what's your life worth?) how much you going to save $30-40 each? I my IMHO, if the cheap one fails it's worth nothing, if the expensive works it's priceless.

Oh, I forgot to mention. Why not move? Why not a pistol?

HI is better quality, but if you get KH, you can get them from their American distributer on ebay and they have shipping discounts if you buy more than one at the same time...
Their prices look higher than their website pictures but the shipping is MUCH less...

BTW... HI prices INCLUDE shipping... At least the DOTD ones do... I am not sure about the HI web site prices...

I have heard good reviews of the other manufacturers of Khuks, especially Tora Khuks, but none have approached the positives that I have heard about HI products. HI produces a beautiful blade that is a true "using" blade. These are not just wall hangers or safe queens. You are getting a unique piece every time you purchase an HI product. They are considered by many to be the toughest blades in the world, and for good reason.

I you are looking for a khukuri strictly for self defense, check out the HI Kumar Kobra or the Chitlangi models. The Kobra will be lighter and faster, but the Chitlangi will also be able to double as a chopper and a working khuk if the need arises. Good luck, you cannot go wrong with an HI blade. Stick around for the Daily deals, you might be able to snag a good one for around half price.

my wife bought me a khuk from e-bay store for christmas..a kh i think..the blade was very well finished..looked to be a real quality piece....till i hit something with it..on the third blow onto very soft brush the blade snapped in two at the cho..the blade did a 180 spin and hit me squarley in the jewels..thank got it turned 180..upon inspection and a peroid to calm down..i found the inside of blade very flawed..looks like the blade was cooked almost to the flash point then pollished clean..will send pic asap....when i contacted the guy on e-bay he was shocked that i could break one of these...to his credit he shipped me another asap..this one was taken out and soundly whacked to test the blade...blade passed ..but the aluminum rivits that hold the handle didnt..they were dead soft ..looked like hammered soda can stuff..i pulled the handle and glued and pined it myself..yes it works but it was a hell of a lot of work..did i just get a lemon? who knows..next time i will do what i've always done in the past ..pay HI for a great knife and not worry about it.

Every blade, including HI, should be tested first if you are going to use it hard in the field and rely upon it.

I have had a few KH kukris and all of them have held up fine to hard work (other then blisters on my hands). I own more of HI for a reason though, they are better quality (and don't give me blisters  ). Spend a little more and get a HI.

If you buy knives for self-defense, have you checked local laws? It may be a crime to "attack" an intruder with a deadly waepon.

Do you plan on practicing? You do not want to swing, miss the bad guy, and hit your knee.

I have 10 Khukuri House knives from a 10" to 25"'s. The finish is very nice and they hold up very well to hard use. I have 1 HI knife, a 22" Chit. villager, and it is very nice also. Between the two I think the KH has a little better finish, but I DID get a villager as my first HI knife so that is probably not fair.

The weather here is kinda dreary, so I might try to take some pics of all my Khukuri's and throw up a quick website in the next day or so.

Isn't this a bit like walking into a Ford dealership and asking about who makes the best truck? ;)

That being said, I've never been other than satisfied with my HI purchases and things seem to be getting better and better. I have no experience with KH.

I have one GH blade and 6 HI blades. The GH blade is old, bought at a time that a now German blade/dagger merchant was at the helm. All of the blades are excellent for their intended purpose. I asked Uncle Bill a question once on one of my purchases.....and there was a very quick answer. I asked the other guy (GH)....and I'm still waiting....three years later! Good luck with whatever you decide, but honesty and integrity are value added issues for me.

Actually,I'm from Hong Kong and all firearms are illegal to own by civilian and Moving out of that area are also impossible ( I've a large house and workshop, and a large farming land here )

It may be a crime to "attack" an intruder with a deadly waepon but when my life ( or my family ) is in danger,I won't hestate to chop them up.

About the snapped khukuri at the cho,I alway think that the cho is the weakest point of a khukuri,If I order from KH,I'll custom order one WITHOUT the cho ,although a khukuri with cho look 10 times better .

I'm always interested in the DOTD of Hi but I'm too slow to order it,everytime I saw the DOTD is with a red SOLD tag.
:grumpy:

The deals of the day are usually posted between 3 pm and 4 pm, Eastern Standard time.GMT-5 hrs. Hong Kong is GMT +8

Good luck

You live in the NT ? :)

DOTD usually at 4-5 am OUR time. :(

Hi Rmokti:

If you want a freaking kukri solely for self defense, you might consider moving. You will need to overcome such things as carrying and concealing a large knife. You will not be able to draw it quickly. You don't have any information in your profile which makes it difficult to answer you question and offer the sought after advice. Is it legal to carry a monster knife concealed where you are? Heck, if you can carry a monster knife, why not a handgun? Such a heavy weapon requires extensive training to use it in a combat situation. Sounds like trouble to me.

My .02 worth.
