Im looking for a good quality knife for sob carry. I want something that will be thin enough between the knife and the sheath so that if I have a pack on it won't have much of an impact. The knife is also to serve as a backup knife so it only needs to be like a 3-5 inch knife blade range. Any help would be appreciated. Also I don't want to spend too much on this knife.

The ESEE 4 is fairly slim and can be rigged for small of back carry. The Becker BK16 and BK17 are also great choices but the sheaths are slightly bulkier.

The Becker tweeners would be good. The sheaths are bulky but that is easily remedied with a kydex sheath.

SOB carry has some real issues - not trying to (and not going to) debate them here - assume you've thought about them. :)

Yes ik the problems such as falling on my back, never fall on that part of my body due to my years in martial arts and wrestling
The plan is also for it to be able to work with a pack which is why the size issue which would help with that problem

The esee 4 looks like it might be a fit for what i need so thank you Silvanus

The other, and larger issue is putting the knife away under stress- it can be a PITA (literally)!

Lets just say its the knife that if im pulling it out its not going away till the stress is gone

Fred Perrin Le Bowie, large version. As long as you don't mind a skeletonized handle, it sounds like it's almost exactly what you're looking for and can be had for under $90. If you want a little more blade length or a more contoured handle, look at the Spyderco Street Bowie, which is essentially the same knife with some minor differences.

All good recomendations so far thank you
It will give me something to research tomorrow since i was at work while most of the answers came in

Seriously though... The spartan blades phrike sounds perfect for you... VERY slim, 4.25" fighting/utility geometry blade, great traction...

Wow thats a very nice fit for what im looking for
Very expensive though
Looks like ive got some saving to do :)

I just got a Dozier Wilderness Guides knife with the "wilderness" sheath. The knife is pretty pointy and the sheath would hang nicely (snug) even back mounted (nylon webbing belt attachment to a kydex sheath). I feel sure some other models would work well, but the sheath is the key.

I am not really into knives that are designed for personal protection or fighting and as a result, seldom have anything that I might contribute to this kind of request.

Wait...
WHY would you want to carry a knife there??? It's almost inaccessible to the wearer and also ridiculous to safely re-sheath without bringing the sheath out, it is quite accessible to others who are aware of its presence (or become aware), it isn't really all that easy to conceal and isn't noticeable to the wearer when it becomes inadvertently un-concealed (which is quite likely to happen in most scenarios where one is moving around)...

Honestly, any knife is MUCH more easily concealed AND accessible to only the user on his/her front or side. The only reason to put a knife in the small of your back is because you expect to be frisked elsewhere and don't anticipate moving in such manner as might expose the presence of the hidden knife. Why not put the knife under your belt-buckle instead? It is just as concealed, just as likely to go un-noticed, and is far more accessible and able to keep concealed. Why put a knife where you can neither tell if others have noticed it nor get to it yourself without some difficulty?

I suspect it is for defensive reasons much like carrying a gun in the sob based on what the OP said.
