Quality/Value of Condor Knives and Axes

As much as I love Condor, I have to disagree on the quality control part. They're trying really hard and they've fixed a lot of problems, but of my initial order of them I had to send nearly a quarter of them back for QC issues(there's a reason I inspect every item that comes in!) They're working on it super hard, though, and if you ever end up with a bad one they'll take care of you well--their customer service is top notch!:thumbup:

What model or models did you get that you had to send back? I'm curious, what were the defects?

Among others, I found a couple of Enep knives and a Boomslang with burnt tips, a Toloza with a gouge in the micarta (which I sold as a "Grade B" item), a couple of Boar Daggers with DULL edges (also "Grade B") a Woodworker Axe with an obtuse edge, a Kumunga that wouldn't fit in its sheath, and a Scout Hatchet with the head mounted crooked. All the ones I sent back were replaced no problem, but it was a good thing I checked 'em. :)

I have a double bit Hudson bay styled hatchet. I think the quality is top notch. Handle fits the head great, the wood seems kind of soft though, not like hickory or maple. I haven't used it hard yet, but have used it and it stays good and sharp. Chops good. Haven't split any wood with it yet. Sheath is very nice. Heavy leather and well made too. I cannot say anything bad about this at all.

I know they're presently using American hickory handles on their axes. Not sure what they were using before, though.

The 2011 models are shipping with American hickory handles and I too don't know what previous versions shipped with. I've been working withe my Greenland Pattern a lot lately and it's an amazing hatchet and worth every cent.

My nephew has a Greenland pattern and agrees with your assessment. It is heavier than some "backpack" hand axes but he says the extra weight is worth it.

I agree with everything you said. I usually just slide my hatchet into the back of my belt, so the little weight is not an issue at all.
