I think most, at least many go through cycles. I started in about 1967 collecting pocket knives as in Imperials, Schrades, Bucks, etc.. I don't think I even owned a locking knife until I was 14 and even through 20 years in the Corps I managed with Leathermans, slipjoints and fixed blades. Fast forward to finding Bladeforums and that is when $100 - $400 knives started peaking my interest. I sold dozens of knives to fund a few and when I got my first Sebenza I was elated. It lasted 2 months and I sold it to buy a quality Swiss Army watch. I personally find knives at the $400 range just too risky as I misplaced it a couple times causing heart palpitations. To some $400 is beans so not the same concerns. The knives I will use for absolutely everything are the Millies, Paras, Grips, Delica, Kershaw models. I have gone from 4 high priced modern folders to dozens of mid-priced and back down again. That's what makes this hobby fun and never-ending.
