Quandary over two customs; two makers; same price

Two great makers. A tough choice! You really won't go wrong either way.

jyen - I can speak with first hand knowledge that the fit and finish on Darrel's knives are hard to beat. Darrel hold's extremely tight tolerances on his designs. That's one reason the Madd Maxx and his other folders are as strong as they are. The rough finish on the CF scales is used to give the handle a bit of a tacky feel. Polished CF is VERY slick. I would strongly urge your friend to send the knife back to Darrel if he wants any changes done. Depending on what he wants done, it might cost only shipping and handling. Darrel is very easy to work with.

My Ralph medium EDC is flawless. Darrel is very friendly and will do basically anything you want (within reason) to one of his knives. I also would recommend he send it back to Darrel himself. I would like an EDC with a Talonite blade, but that will have to wait for now. I personally couldn't wait for 18 months to get a knife, which is why I never ordered a Terzuola. I've never handled a TNT but I'm sure if you let me handle one, I'd want to take it home!

Man! 18 months. A lot can change in a person's life about the time they get that fateful phone call saying their knife is ready to ship. It'd be like a blast from the past.

"Who's this on the phone? Bob who? Knife? What knife? I had one on order? In what finish and color? Oh, no, my tastes have changed. I no longer wear bell bottoms and skinny leather jackets, so the knife style you mention no longer fits in my wardrobe. You must be mistaken."

Hmm, looks like I need to add a little to my previous comment. There is nothing wrong with Darrel's work, he does very nice stuff. I think he makes and finishes his knives with an emphasis on use and utility whereas Tom's knives are just as usable but has a more refined or elegant finish. You can't go wrong with either and the only reason I brought this up at all is because it is hard to get this sort of feel for the finish without actually handling the knives. Just something to consider. Oh, and I think that Darrel's Talonite EDC has a blade ground from thicker stock if that makes a difference.

I just got back from Darrel's today. He said he will be offering a hand rubbed satin finish on his knives as a standard option. I saw a balisong he did with the finish and it looks NICE!

Hi folks,
I am posting a list of the next generation upgrades that will come standard on my knives. I want to move my direction towards a more individual limited style knife with high grade hand fit and finish.
Please take a look and let me know what you think.
At times I feel re-invention is nessasary to create new levels in every walk of life. This is one of those times for me and my knives.
I have put much thought into these upgrades over the last 6 months.
Here is what I have come up with.
Below are the NEW standards I have incorporated into my knives.
At this time the 3-inch micro Maxx “Static” and my balisongs
(Carved Venturi) are being made with these upgrades. I have a new folder in the works that will incorporate these features also. I will upgrade the rest of my knives over time.
Here is a link to some of the pictures of the upgrades.
http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=210853
Other pictures can be seen on my site under Venturi balisong pictures.
I will be posting new pictures to my site next weekend of the Static Maxx with these upgrades also. I have not posted any of the hand rubbed blades at this time. I will in the next month or so.

1. The frames are high grade (almost mirrored) on the outside now. All the edges have a melted feeling to them after hand finishing them. The inside of the knife frame is chamfered for comfort in the hand also.

2. The frames will be satin finished (hand rubbed) on the faces and are contoured (rounded and domed).
This makes the knives feel great in the hand and slims the knives down for a very nice carry in your pocket.
Finishes will include satin, bead blast, anodized.
Handle options will include:
Nugget work
File work on the blades and handle exterior.

3. All of the screws and hardware are hand polished to a high finish.

4. The clips are all hand rubbed satin finished.

5. The knives come with the tip up and tip down screw holes drill and ready for use. The blank screw holes are filled with an extra set of screws.

6. The blades will be available with 3 finishes.
A. Hand rubbed.
B. 600 grit machine satin finish.
C. The dual finish for tough use.
The blades are now coming with a thinner edge grind.
I have done extensive testing on the blade materials that I am using. Every blade steel (except talonite) that I have tested for use on my knives will take a thinner edge and survive under normal everyday use. They will pass the many of the cutting tests that I have learned from Jerry Fisk at the Camillus get togethers. I will adjust the edge to the blade length. Larger blades will have a little more thickness at the edge for heavier cutting chores.

I will offer the following standard steels on my knives.

D2

CPMS30V

OPTIONAL STEELS:

CPMS90V for the extreme user (harder to sharpen)

Mike Norris Stainless Damascus.

Talonite and or Stellite (your choice)

7. I offer 2 - 3 blade styles for most of my knives. This gives the customer a choice of different blade shapes. If you want something not shown …… Just ask!

8. Most knives from will have limited edition carved patterns in the handles.
Another words there will be limited number of frame styles made in a particular carved or inlayed pattern to keep the collectabiltiy high.
I will offer them with inlayed handles on select models. The frames will be offered with a pure hand rubbed satin finish and no carving (plain) also.
Inlay materials will include carbon fiber, g10, stag, fancy ivory or pearl and other exotic material.
These handles will have a contoured shape.

9. All of the knives will have a jeweled finish on the inside of the knife.

10. The unlocking area of the lock bar and the opposite side will have grip grooves in them. This is for ease of unlocking the blade from the open position.
I will still maintain my straight across theory on the frame. No thumb relief will be cut into the frame on the opposite side from the lock. The thumb relief will be cut into the frame on the inside. This is the best set up for when you twist the frame in your hand while cutting. It stops the knife from accidentally unlocking. The new grip notch’s help with the opening of the lock from the blade open position.

Thanks for the comments and faith in my work.

Now you've just bankrupted me Darrel!

Hey Boink:
That is one of the funniest things I ever read! Thanks for agreeing with me on that one. I understand it's an "occupational hazard" to have to wait that long for a very specific knife, but my tastes have changed so much, I probably would have had that reaction too. "Bob who?" ROFLMFAO!:) That is priceless! Thanks all.

Made me laugh, too. I think I posted that while imbibing some wine one night, perusing the forums. I was like, "18 months! ... whoa!"
