Quartermaster?

HAhahaha, this quote is lifted from a "Super Moderator" on the Mantis Knives Forum (also confirming they are, in fact, a Mantis offshoot).

"Seriously cool designs. I love how they incorperated the names of the guys from "The A Team".

The only thing I didn't understand was when they were talking about the Tough Tony design, the "Murdock", they said that they opted for a powder metallurgy steel to enhance the quality of the knife. I thought the Mantis Pit Boss and Tough Tony were made from CPM 440V, which is a powder steel, unless I am mistaken. CPM 154 is a superb steel, but I don't know if it is much, or any better than CPM 440V.

Most of these designs appear to have at least a little bit of the Mantis style, obviously Jared is involved."

Caught you Jared West...unless CPM154 is actually better than CPM440V...

This is for all you guys who thought he was lying about using S60V in sub-$100 knives. All but proof I suppose.

CPM means Crucible Particle Metallurgy, with "particle" being synonymous with "powder".

If I'm not mistaken, S60V/CMP440V isn't even in production anymore, and hasn't been for a few years. Mantis is the only company to have (claimed to) use it in quite a while, at least to any notable degree.

QTRM5TR/Quartermaster is very obviously a Mantis offshoot/spinoff. Just look at the name "QTRM5TR". It's the same "l33t" or "h4x0r" speak idiocy that Mantis uses naming their other knives. And obviously the designs/influence is the same. I don't know they they haven't just gone out and announced it, but it's obvious to anyone with a brain (granted, not Mantis' target demographic) that they're the same thing. This fact makes me wonder if they're not already aware of their poor reputation and are hoping to fool some dupes into thinking that this is a new company with new products. It seems to me that if they were releasing an "elite" line of their own knives, they would want to want to announce this and emphasize it. Unless they knew they wouldn't sell under the Mantis name.

I believe the defense to the above claim (in red) was that Jared West had bought up some S60V from a mill or supplier or somebody that was closing down and he was able to get quite a bit for next to nothing. Of course, it must have been the cheapest S60V because the "Tough Tony" they used has an MSRP of $65 on their own site.

But anywho, makes me ponder the quality of these products. I would guess you are right in that they are trying to come out with some sort of super 1337, everybody sucks ZT or MT wannabe brand. But the real question is, what thumb stud should I open my Hannibal with today? 3 thumb studs and a flipper? Strange considering none of the thumb studs are used as a blade stop even.

I would also like to add, that even though the karambit "Baracas" thingy has some features that appeal to me like CPM154 supposedly, bearings, and a framelock type thing, it looks super goofy and EXTREMELY uncomfortable to hold like the other 3 knives on their site.

I've just recently discovered this manufacturer. Their designs are very bizarre looking, and there's definitely a Mantis inspiration/relationship that must be present. I can't imagine any practicality in any of their models, aside from the materials used in their manufacture. I am interested to see where this company goes...

I think it's an attempt at "rebranding" since nobody wants anything to do with Mantis.

^This. Too bad they didn't realize it wasn't just Jared West that keeps people at a distance. It's their designs, too. :p

I just read myself up to date about this Roadside Imports/Exiled Cutlery person and his ridiculous Benchmade 42 Chinese knockoff knockoff travesty and the whole thing made me so sick that I actually felt quite a bit of sympathy for Mantis knives and this new line. No matter what you think of them, they do design their own models (from what I've understood, correct me if I'm wrong) and they're at least doing what they can to be innovative designwise, which is something I think should be encouraged. If they on top of that make knives from good materials and put them together well, I won't complain much regardless of what I think about the design.

The name "quartermaster" reminds me of the catalog company from Smyrna Georgia ( Brigade Quartermaster) started and run by some very interesting folks back in the 70's or 80's. The original M.A.C. plant is on the compound last time I was there without the tooling which had been sold, resold, etc.

Time left them behind but they were one of the best catalog companies going back then with all high quality gear. I hate the idea of Jared using that name as he doodles on napkins designs for bicycles and super cars after all he's really a designer. Can't you tell by the elegance of the mantis products?

Last time I called to ask about what real steel they used the "fact" that Jared was designing bikes for some company was accidentally mentioned a few times, along with a few attempts to get me to join the mantis militia.

It took every bit of self discipline for me not to join. even though, as Jared explained, as a member I could have a knife made in any steel I wanted.

What's O times zero again?

Joe

It's funny how they were supposedly not exporting their knives, yet my supplier has their products on stock
and also funny thing, they have them listed as a Mantis knives brand.

I was kinda excited bout the large folder but Mantis knives is never getting my hard earned bucks.

Jared worked for Mantis . Gary was a silent owner running another company of his own . Jared fell out with Gary

There's a lot of inconsistent information that wasn't matching up with his story that I was hearing

I don't care if he's making knives or what ever but don't piss on my face and tell me it's raining
But it appears that a LEE Price runs it now but no one has met or spoken face to face with mr price that I know of

Also his girlfriends name is LEEann PRICE

Qtrmstr, Mantis and Jared are three words that we never utter on Blade Forums. At least not in polite company. ;)

^ Haha. I'm glad others have already chimed in on the name Jared West.

Edit: Whoa-- didn't notice the date stamps.
Regardless, thanks for the info Flipin
