Quasi-review and boot comparison!
I have had a pair of HH Browns a shoe company that makes Cocorans, Matterhorns and Danners but mine are brown, since 1991. That is 18 years! They have been resoled once. They were worn when I have worked for a moving company, construction, long distance hikes, yard work and on current hikes.
7 months ago I purchased a custom pair of moccasins from Russell Mocassin company. The are really comfortable. I don't wear them everyday because I bought them for short hikes in the woods. I have been on some hikes and have worn them in urban areas occasionally. I made a post when I bought them and people asked for a review but foot wear is different than a knife. It takes some time to report.
For the holidays we flew to Mississippi and took buses to airport in Vancouver. They saw a lot of urban walking for 2 weeks.
After about 6 months of occasional wear. I can say that these should not be purchased as hiking shoes. The soles are thin and rocks are felt really well. That also means that there is less insulation against cold. I wore these in really cold weather and my feet froze even though I had appropriate weather socks. They are also very slippery and offer no traction at all. Smooth concrete, marble type floors and even wet grassy hills can be dangerous.
With that said, I purchased these for short leisurely solo hikes in the woods where I practice martial arts. I want to feel the ground under my feet and get centered. They work great for that and I am very pleased with this purchase. With a high level of maintenance on the soles they should last for 20 years at least. I treat them with saddle soap after every usage and do not abuse them.
After comparing two types of boots, the mocs and the Danner, I see the Danner style boot as a better long distance, all weather hiking boot. So if anyone was out there drolling over mocs I would caution you to have a specific purpose for them.
Thanks for reading,
