Queen Barlow #69 Feathered Buffalo Horn

So feathered buffalo horn is something that Queen came up with to describe their buffalo horn that had this coloring? It's not an industry-wide term?

As far as I know. GEC calls theirs Smooth Black Buffalo Horn or something similar to that. Others just call it buffalo horn. The color is the only thing that makes sense to me, as otherwise it's just buffalo horn that's polished smooth.

Ah ok. I did note that. Thanks. Do you know if they're still doing the PH-D2?

I would like to know the answer to this as well. My guess is that Peters still does the heat treat but Queen simply replaced the PH on the tang with U.S.A. I have no idea really. Just a guess.

My Stockman has PH-D2 stamped on it's tang. I believe it was manufactured in 2014.

My 2014 Railsplitter and my 2011? Canoe are also stamped with PH-D2. In the original posters pictures it looks like they have added the DFC and U.S.A. but taken away the PH.

I like the new tang stamps better but it does spark my curiosity on the Peters heat treat. Probably just a cosmetic change but you never know.

Gotcha. Thanks to everyone for the clarification.

I received one of these today from KSF with high hopes, my first Queen. Unfortunately, the main shows quite a bit of wobble and there's a lot of grit when opening both blades, so back she goes. Too bad, because I really like the look of the knife and I love buffalo horn. But at $85, not acceptable. Not a good first experience with Queen Cutlery.

Man, I hate That. I saw no issue with mine. Chris Montgomery even looked it over and and didn't find anything other than what I pointed out and he always can find thing I can't. I'd contact Queen.

The "grit" when opening the blades is common in Queen knives, so the action is not as smooth as GEC or others, but that is just the way Queen makes their knives. It doesn't really affect the rest of the knife, so I've just disregarded it as something to expect from Queen. It is offset, in my mind, by getting a nice sharp blade. Sorry about the wobble. That should not happen, but I've never had that with the few Queens I've purchased.

Thanks guys. I may look into having Queen repair the wobble. If the grittiness is inherent to this company, then I'm not as concerned about it. I'll contact them and see what they say.

The grittiness will go away. Open the knife and let that grit polish the liners smooth, in no time it'll open like butter

I agree. On an $85 knife neither the wobble nor the grittiness is acceptable.

I have a current production Queen knife with a gritty action. The grittiness has not gone away.

Yeah, that's what I thought when I read the initial comments from the vendor stating that the actions on this set of knives had issues. I should have believed him and skipped this model. It's due to a poor machining job on the cam and it's a permanent issue. OK for a user I guess, but definitely annoying.

I spoke with Queen today, and they said that they were being far more careful with their heat treating. You can likely stop being so "gun shy" when it comes to their products.

Gaps. Gaps as far as the eye could see!

The heat treat seemed fine. That was not my issue at all.

This barlow had only the one minor surface gap. Light doesn't bleed through. I've got a couple of GEC's that do bleed light however. I've just been too busy/lazy to send them back. I'm wondering if Queen is still dealing with some of the hit and miss issues, or if they are actually tightening up, and some of the issues posted above are on less recently run knives.
